Yup, it's pretty confusing alright, tbh I hadn't a clue goin into college. There's a few ways to fully qualify. The most common is to do an accounting or accounting related degree and then do a professional qualification(with ACCA/ICAI/CIMA/CPA did I miss anyone? ;)) Depending on your degree you will probably get some exemptions for professional exams, for example I got 6 exemptions, and still had 8 ACCA exams to sit. These professional exams are usually done as part of training contract, ie you work full time, and study part time.

If you choose to do a more general business related degree, you may get few or no exemptions, if you have a completely unrelated degree you will get no exemptions. Some people with no accounts background or no degree course choose to do an accounting technician course to get started. However I think(could be wrong on this!) the Elevation course provided by ICAI allows someone without a degree to go straight for ICAI exams, but the conditions are different.

If you go an to any of the websites(CIMA ACCA etc) there is a part where you can check what exemptions you would be entitled to depending on the course you choose.

First things first I recomend you get a degree. DCU (Accounting and Finance) or UCD (Commerce) are your best bets if you are sure accountancy is the thing for you.

Then in your final year of your studies apply to as many accountancy firms as possible - many go for one of the Big four Accountancy Firms. You will normally be required to have a 3.5 year contract and sit your exams while you work.

Its tough going but if you have the right frame of mind you will be grand. Also be aware of the different qualifications - mainly ACA,ACCA,CIMA,CPA,IATI etc etc and decide what is best for you. The big four will make you do ACA, so its also worth bearing that in mind
