"Manspace" - a space of your own

Again inspired by the ted.com talk about manspaces - http://www.ted.com/talks/sam_martin_builds_a_room_of_his_own.html
It's only 4 minutes so quick and easy.

Basically it's about having a place of your own to just chill out, unwind or even work.

Do you have one? I still live at home so my bedroom is the only place I can really get away from it all. Have my laptop, smallish bookcase and my bed :D Quite a modest lil one compared to some in the pics in the talk.

Ideally I would like a set of decks in my room so i can just muck about with it. Or even clear out a space in the garage and get some wood work stuff going.

So tell us about your lil space that you hide away from the world in and chill out :D

I'm female but for the most part it's my car.

If what you mean is getting your mind clear, then I get in my car, drive a few hundred miles, blaring music I like, and just let my mind drift through stuff.

    Works wonders :D

The room in the link, we have 3 bedrooms and an office. I sometimes go in here to play some games on the Nintendo or Sega Megadrive or just chill out. Bed is a folds into a couch too. :) The room needs work, but it's a start.

In Waterford, it's just my bedroom, comfortable bed, good sound system, plenty of CD's, laptop, desktop and I'm happy.

Over in London at the moment, we're lucky, the 'attic' is a manspace to be proud of, it has a bar, 4 full sized couches, Xbox 360, Playstation, 50" TV, HD projector, surround sound... and a full sized snooker table. As I said, we're lucky :pac:

Strangely, when I wanna clear my head, I go to work. I feel really at home in my job, I've a lot of friends there, it keeps me busy and I'm extremely good at it, which makes me feel good. I also have a lot of freedom so I can steal some time to think as well.

For the rest, I go to bed pretty late in the night so the whole house is pretty much my playground, which is nice.

I'm a girl (don't judge! ;) ) but I am just about to move into a new place with my boyfriend.
We got ourselves a 3 bedroom apartment. A bit excessive for a couple you might think, but it's 2 doubles and a single room, which is now being fondly referred to as the 'man-cave' ;)
It's pretty much his room to put his decks and computer in (he's a DJ) and I just bought him an Xbox for his birthday last week, so that can go in there too.

I actively encourage him having his own space, because it means I get mine too, and I think that really is the key to living with your other half - living together, but having 'me' time when needed.
This way, he gets to chill out in the 'man-cave' and I get to watch copious amounts of Buffy boxsets in the living room in peace and quiet ;)
Win win if you ask me! ha

My bedroom. I still live with my parents but my bedroom is in the attic. It's huge, it has my guitars, my laptop, my tv, my consoles, a mini fridge, a huge beanbag etc. etc.

I love driving in my car though, doesn't matter where to, it always clears my mind and lets me think about whatever it is.

I'm willing to bet that Fajitas paid Will to start this thread just so he could gloat...AGAIN!
For me it's the car. It used to be the shed but that got consumed by stuff that was not mine as a result of having a household full of wimminz.

Any space can be a man space but besides my car or my study, I have my den.

Totally agree on the need to have a space when you're living with someone.
You'd just end up going mental being around the same person all the time.

I still live at home unfortunately, so my bedroom is where I like to relax, but we moved about 4 or 5 months ago into a much smaller place and I get very little privacy in my room now  A very close second place is my car.....either driving it, cleaning it, or tickering with it!

Actually Snow Monkey made me realise another lil place i like to be, in the kitchen cooking (when motivated) I find cooking quite relaxing and I am productive in there too supplying food :)

My ma is a great cook and learned lots from her, happy days.

For me it's my room. I stick some headphones on, relax and play bass. Ahhh... :)

I love going for walks by myself also. Just wandering around and maybe sitting down somewhere quiet just taking in the scenery or happenings in the area. :)

i've my home office which is as close as i get. though i am hoping to put a 32 inch monitor/tv in there for marathon entourage sessions and mega excel spreadsheet deadlines.

my hideout is the allotment. open countryside, a shed and a camping stove. what else could a man need

Brandy and a fine cigar. :)

Apart from my car and my head, I've pretty much no space to call my own. Certainly not within my home anyway. Kids are the main problem; nothing stops them bursting in. When we were younger we used to have to lock the bedroom door. :D

    in the shed?
Absoloutly. Sometimes being alone in the shed, surrounded by your beloved tools, pots, insectasides and junk, sitting on an upturned bucket is the perfect venue for a snifter and sparking up a fat one.

Does the jacks count? Because I fcukin' love going to the jacks, locking the door and reading. Pure, undisturbed bliss!

When I got together with my OH she insisted that I didnt change my routine going out with my friends.

On balance this was good and has sort of got rid of my personal space need somewhat.

I do think if you have kids you loose that to a degree( I have 2 from another relationship) - so in that way having seperate friends etc gives me an out.

IAWT. I love going for a ****e, bring a magazine or book and have a good read. Or bring in the laptop and watch a DVD. I'd sit for hours on the ****ter if it wasn't for my legs going dead. It's the one place no-one bothers you. You might get a knock on the door or an, "Are ye in there?" but after that you'll be left alone. Bliss.

Was talking about this with some guys in work. The consensus, at least amongst guys renting apartments with their OH is that the night time is man time, when the OH goes to bed. Seemed to be the case that the OH's would usually go to sleep earlier and the guys would stay up and have the run of the apartment, being quite of course.

Is this the case with anyone else also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,640 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

That works well until the kidlets grow into teenlets and decide that the Night time is TeenagerTime. You find yourelf ousted out of the way before midnight.

I'm fortunate enough to have two, I changed the box room into a computer room for when I'm in a tech mood and the garage has all my tools/workstations etc. for my tinkering pleasure. My other half has control over everything else. Especially the soddin' big tv and remote when America's Next Top Model Wannbe is on.

A woman with a baby undertakes a policy of Lebensraum and systematicaly takes over the house. There is a name for people with this urge but I am afraid to post it as young fellas and your hubby post in this forum.

    Resist.

No, I'm a computer nerd and artist...though I do like my nice clothes.

In terms of manspace I have no problem with it, whenenver we move we will get a study and Shane can get his room back (as will I).
