    Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    1. Click Start and then click All Programs.
    2. Click Accessories, and then click Run.
    3. Type regedit, and then click OK.

      If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
    4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ((Highlight it dont expand it ))
    5. In the right pane, right click UpperFilters
      On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.
    8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    10. Exit Registry Editor.
    11. now open device manager from Ctrl Panel
    12. uninstall the DVD RW driver
    13. now restart wait until the driver reinstalls if it doesnt Download it from the website
    if this doesnt solve your issue
    its a series SW issue "do a Full recovery or a System restore"
    or a HW issue in this case you can check none of the connections became dislodged or get a new drive

    Software = SW
    Hardware =HW

    one of the first Troubleshooting steps for a DVD drive is to delete the upper and lower filters
    and reinstall the driver

    it would'nt matter if it stopped working 5 mins or 5 days ago

    This device is working properly.

    Dont be fooled by device manager
    although it says the device is working properly
    it still may be the registery entry
    causing the issue

    windows can be funny sometimes
    if you delete the filters its always a good idea to reinstall the driver

    this is the Microsoft KB on the issue
    it doesnt say to uninstall the driver but for best results its better to do so

    is it dvds or cds that won't load. If it's just dvds then the solution above is the one (even though for me it never worked =\) but if cds won't load either then there's a bigger problem

    Is this safe and ok do??? And how do get it up too

    Thanks
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

      Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

      Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
    8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    10. Exit Registry Editor.
    11. Restart the computer.
