If an Iphone was bought from America right now, Would it be possible to unlock it?
I don't Know much about them but am really interested in getting one.

    Cheers

I presume you are after a 3G? It will probably come with the latest firmware and that, in this point in time is not unlockable.

If it's a used one (with 3.0 or 3.0.1) or one that was bought before 3.1 and never opened then yes it can be unlocked if you don't update the firmware.

if it was one that was jailbroken before 3.1 and the baseband is the correct one for unlocking it can be unlocked.

Thanks. But if I got one on 3.1 would it eventually be able to unlock it?

That's great. Does anyone know how much a contract free Iphone 3GS would set me back in NY?

I too am off to the States and am thinking of getting an iPhone. That link only seems to refer to the iPhone 3g, not the iPhone 3Gs.
    3. 3GS jailbreak is not available at this time.

Is there any point in getting a 3Gs iPhone with the latest firmware in the US then?

I guess never say never, but at this point there is no unlock for 3.1 3g & 3G

There is a jailbreak for all phones as of late last night.

As far as I know there is no way of buying a new iPhone from Apple or at&t without a contract.

    3G has a jailbreak now.

I don't see getting a 3G or 3G from the States new as a viable option if you are just visiting.

    Edit:

    Just want to say in case some are confused;

If you have an iphone on 3.0 and updated to 3.1 (not 3.1.2)via the dev teams method preserving the baseband) then you can unlock it. Only if the phone was jailbroken on 3.0

So the cheapest way for me to get an iPhone (without signing up to O2) is eBay?

    Hi

Or wait until Vodafone release theirs
