Are first years still retold this story? :)

    --

As the legend goes Room 2 of Rhetoric House was the sight of a student suicide by means of a razor in 1842. For the next two years the resident of that room met a similar fate until, during the third year, the similarly possessed new student opted to throw him- self out the window, instead, breaking many bones, but still surviving. From that point on no new students consented to live in Room 2, so by Trustee resolution
on October 23, 1860, the room was converted into an Oratory of St. Joseph, with a small altar in place of the room’s back wall.

After this, the tale goes on, a priest spent the night in the room and was so terrified by whatever he saw – he refused to speak about it – that his hair turned bright white.

Hans Holzer, the great paranormal researcher, personally visited Maynooth in the company of a psychic and recorded impressions of a four-legged creature which felt fear and the desire to run – as well as a strong presence around the statue, where the window once was.

Apparently there's also an interesting account in Denis Meehan's book Window on Maynooth (1949)

Ha! I asked my tour guide to bring us up to the room on the campus tour. Was well worth it. The bloodstains are still on the floor!

Also, there is no mirror in the room anymore so the image of satan cannot appear in it. (Can't wait to place a mirror in there in April ;))

Love how the story grows more bells every few years.

A student in the history department completed a phd on suicide amongst priests four years ago, and gave a paper on it. Her sources are discussed in one of her chapters. If there is any interest, I can go looking - cant remember her name right now.

I heard one of the priests drank a can of coke before killing himself, because he found it especially refreshing.

The window was pointed out to me a week ago and after reading this story i got creepy feeling this morning... could be that i was up early and there were people around doing stuff at what is more or less the middle of the night and that alone was weird...

i was told the same on my tour guide too! My tour guide took the whole group to an old graveyard and showed the group the three unmarked graves of the priests... and showed us where they were supposed to have killed themselves

it was a very interesting first day thats for sure :p

There's a Ghost Tour of South Campus this tuesday at 10pm. Think it's being led by Peter Carr. It's free. I'm so there.

haha, I went to primary school in Maynooth, and every kid in the place was told this story, whenever we went on our 'school walks' in the college the boarded up window was pointed out to us and the story retold. it was in our local history books and all!

I first heard about that room in Maynooth when I was 12 and read a book on the haunted places of Ireland. I think it's well enough known. Isn't there also a shrine walled up in that room?

The first student was found clutching a piece of paper.
    Written in blood it read,

"What do you get when you put a baby in the Microwave?"

On the other side of the parchment....

    "An Erection"
