Can someone remind me how to view the available downloaded updates on XP before installing them, used to know how but have been using vista so long have fogetton, am sure the defence sheild used to show on the task bar, and clicking on that would bring up the relavent window, however, no sign of defence shiled

basically spent some of yesterday resurecting an old laptop, new hard drive, reintalled XP, my copy of SP2, AVG, and SP3 from windows update. looked at the windows updates webpage somemore, showed further recomended updates including IE8, and lastest security patches etc, didn't knowingly download any of them as not all i wanted, ie IE8, couldn't see opiton to choose which ones i wanted

but when i went to turn off the laptop, gave me opition of installing new updates, but didn't give me opiton to view them, shut down without installing, when logged back on, still no sign of the defence shield, went into the security centre, checked my securty centre, installed programes, can see SP3 has been installed, but no sign of the updates it gave me the opiton to install as well anywhere

Control Panel>Windows Security Center>Manage security settings for:>Automatic Updates

Check the "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them" radio button.

When they're available, you should get a yellow shield in the taskbar (IIRC), which you can then click to invoke, and choose what you want to install.

have done all that when reintalled XP yesterday, and even double checked after it gave me the option to install when shuting down, so was asuming there were available updates when it gave me the opiton to install them, but sheild is not displaying, have checked the taskbar properties as well to make sure it shows when required as well

Well, maybe you don't have any available downloads at the moment then. You can force it to check by going onto the Microsoft website, and checking that way. You can also check to see if you have any updates that you've refused to apply, and apply them if you want.

can that be viewed anywhere in the control panel, was sure i seen that on XP before, or maybe i have really been using vista for to long and have just forgotton

am sure their there because when going to shut down, and have just tried this now, am getting two opitons, 1, turn off and install downloaded updates, and 2, turn off with out installling

have gone back to the microsoft updates website, have worked out how to install the ones i want, and disregard the ones i dont, currently downloading, and as doing so the yellow sheild has popped up,

hope this relsoves it, still confused by the options i was getting ealier though, did XP aways do this and i forgot it did, ie, option to install when shutting down and maybe there wasn't actually anthing to install

control pannel- add remove software-show installed updates (on the top of the open window)

but these are updates waiting to be installed, so surely they wouldn't be in that window

think its sorted, have selected the updates required, have shut down and restarted, the installed updates are now appearing in the 'control pannel- add remove software-show installed updates' window where i would expect them to, and yellow shield is displaying giving the opiton to install less important downloaded available updates as well including IE8, also as i would expect it to

final question for now, how do i or can i remove the reminder to install IE8 and other less important updates from the automatic updates, dont want to use it IE8 for now, dont know enough about and have heard not all sites compatbale with it, dont want it adding accidently when shutting down, i know how to remove these things if added, and i know you can shut down without adding as well, but trying to keep laptop as simple as possible, but sucure at same time as giving laptop to parents who have little computer experience, and they may not want stuff adding that they dont need

might just do that and go the update website periodically instead, think you can get dependent on the automatic updates and forget there is alternatives, i would just be wary of the laptops security, or maybe windows and mr gates are just trying to keep us wary

    :D
