Conscious of the economic pressures on parents today, this Government will not
proceed with any new scheme of student contribution for Third Level education

    Well its the plan..

I was reading somewhere earlier on that it would have taken the government 6 or 7 years to implement the plan for third level fees. So, it seems that the whole fees fiasco was an idle threat for the foreseeable future from the get go. Interesting spin on things don't you think?

it's pretty awful when you think of the offsetting of the third level fees-ie increased taxes. the programme for the government has very sneaky when it comes to the taxes and as far as i have read it, there is actually going to be an increase of income taxes. so ya, very fair...i must say

still this doesnt stop o keeffe going to FG for the proposal of graduation tax and implementing that either. and they wont even need the green support for it...

It gets better though folks. John Gormley had this to say earlier on today,

    (The important bit is bolded)
Green Party leader John Gormley has said there is no intention to reintroduce third level fees but that increasing registration fees was a matter for universities to decide.

You can take it for granted that registration fees will therefore increase every year for the next few years. Joy.

Problem is that if the money for the colleges isn't coming from Gov fees then it has to be got somewhere i.e. through the reg fee. Only

It would have taken quite a few years to get the law changed to get college fees in, and the Greens were smart in asking for a popular choice - no fees. FF weren't gonna retain power if there was a general election in the next couple of months. Smart move to gain a few public brownie points IMO!!!

A bad day for UCC. The poor funding it receives from the government will continue handicapping any progress it may make in becoming a world class institution.

Plus this just means that reg fees go up up up. If a loan system had been introduced reg fees would have been subsumed into the overall fee. But now we are paying more up front than we would have if there was a loan system.

Well done to the Student Union indeed
