Right,I'm a proud owner of a 2002 Octavia VRS.Out doin the shopping with the missus literally 2 hours ago.
Driving out of the car park, and came to a halt.
Went to put it back into the gear,It simply refused.

Car will go into gear when I turned off the ignition,I managed to get it into reverse and with the help of 2 lads got into a parking space.

    What am I looking at?
    Clutch?

Sounds like clutch to me.Will it go in to gear with the engine off?

My 03 VRS had a new clutch at just gone 62,000 miles as it started slipping like a biatch. Mechanic friend did the clutch, timing belt and a few other bits for €1,100 a couple of years ago.

It's only the VW/Audi bits that let the Skoda's down

    Yup

If it's not been slipping though (and you'd notice that) then it might be some part of the clutch rather than all of it.

Unfortunatley, my knowledge of the oily bits of the cars is limited but I'm sure a mechnic will be along shortly.

Good luck getting it sorted and hope it doesn't set you back too much.

Managed to tow it 2 miles to safety there, thing is,I can still engage reverse and use it.
    Just no forward gears?

Forward clutch pack is probably gone. Sorry to hear that, not nice just after buying the damned thing! Did you buy from a dealer?

sounds like some part of gear linkage has come loose. If something was wrong with the clutch you wouldn't have been able to reverse.

Any unusual noises from the box or strange feel to the gear stick (ie light to move without resistance)?

I bought it privately in February

No,nothing really, one minute it was working.
Next minute it was gone. :(

Goes into all gears no hassle without any resistance when car is off.

That rules out the gear linkage.

Anymore opinions anyone?before the dreadest visit to the mechanic

Quick update, clutch has to be replaced, its recommended that the flywheel is done so too.

Parts are pretty expensive ,so if anyone can recommend anywhere to source a clutch kit for a 1.8t AUQ engine elsewhere it would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried your local motor factors? Think it was only about €200 - €250 for the clutch kit. My flywheel didn't need touching and the car was flying after that - still is, my Brother in Law no has it with no issues.

    EDIT

The mechanic has recommended that the flywheel should be replaced, this is bumping up the cost

Is she driving at the moment?

If you can get her up to Belfast, these guys come highly recommended on the VAG forums www.walshmotors.co.uk and they're literally half the price of any indy mechanic down here for such a big job

EDIT: Consider the current sterling rate, these guys are for nothing!

I got a clutch kit from this crowd at a very good price a few weeks back:

    www.irishautoparts.ie/

they're in Tallaght, cost a lot less then the dealer and €30 less then a UK supplier when you account for delivery charges. Plus they had the clutch there 4 hours after I ordered it.

Something similar happened my 03 octavia, about two months ago, pulled out of carpark and when i went to go to 2nd the clutch was wedged to the floor. I managed to force it out, but still nothing. Fearing the worst i took it to my local mechanic and it turned out to be a simple fix.
there was a cracked bolt in the gearbox which caused the problem, seemingly it is a known problem. Only cost me €40 to get it fixed:D:D

    best of luck

Looks like I'll be going UK for the parts, much cheaper than any irish site

Is it just the clutch you are fitting or are you going to change the flywheel as well?
