Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and Backup -> Restore...
and then where you have the file search for that and you away

Id recommend febe in future to backup firefox

This does not work! The problem i'm having is that JSON format is not recognised. the bookmarks are located on a external device

well theres something seriously wrong there, because where i got that from thats what is says to do for that file type.

Did you try editing the file and getting the bookmarks out of it or opening it with firefox?

more googling there, if its not letting you read or import from it then the file is corrupt.

seems a lot of people have the same problem just from a quick google.

It just seems you used a backup method that everyone's having problems with.

there are viewers for this file type. you might try them and copy an paste the bookmarks out of it.
