Ultra Marathon Advice

    Folks.
Looking for some advice on ultra marathons. I have run 6 marathons to date and I am considering upping the challenge to the connemara ultra in 2010 and 12hour track race May 2011 followed by the East Hull Harriers 24 hour track race in July 2011.
Anyway I am trying to get my head around the sheer scale of it all at the moment.
    Some questions -
1/ If you hoped to cover 100 miles in 24 hours, what distance would you need to cover in the first 12 hours.
2/ On average, I know everybody is different, how many miles per hour would you expect to walk/run in the later stages of a 24 hour race. ie after 12 hours -how bad does it get ? Is 4 miles an hour unreasonable ?
3/ Do you hit the wall as in running when power walking or can you do this for much longer periods ?
4/ Anybody know of any good books on ultras (especially books with details on run/walk strategies)
Again, I am just contemplating going the ultra route and all advice would be welcome in helping me make my mind up.
    Thanks all

Here's some points on the Cone Ultra - There's alot of people in the same boat.

A few others here can help you with the rest.

For the record, I've done 6 24 hour races so far, so....

    (1) Ideally 50. Probably more likely to be 60.

    (2) Ideally the same pace you start at. I work in KmPH so I can't really relate to your pacings, but I've finished 24s at about 9KmPH. That's one of the reasons why I get good results.

    (3) I've never powerwalked, but I've seen a good female powerwalker win the Female category of a 24hour race by powerwalking the same pace from start to finish (and doing in excess of 100 miles).

    (4) There are as many run-walk strategies as there are ultrarunners. You'll learn a lot more from doing a 24hour race than from any amount of books. My first 24 hour was a huge learning experience for me, and I've been honing my own race plans with the experience of each successive race. If your end goal is a 24 hour race, then do one next year.
