Yes it certainly is. Once you download the update, copy it to your own PC and start iTunes - in the phone settings tab, hold down shift (assuming you're on Windows - for Mac OS X, you need to hold down option/alt instead) while clicking the "Restore" button. It'll pop up a file open dialog and you can point it to the firmware file that you copied over.

2 Warnings - this won't work without an Internet connection

Warning - if you ever plan on unlocking your iPhone for another network I would wait before installing 3.1 and use a pwnage tool to update. The 3.1 update flashes the baseband as well as o.s firmware which prevents this from being possible with currently available exploits and potentially forever.

Also if your iPhone is currently jailbroken updating to 3.1 will break that as part of the update.

If your sure you don't want to jailbreak or unlock ever then proceed but update to 3.1.2 as it's available now you just need to download the appropriate Ipsw file from the web depending on what iPhone you are using and do as the previous poster suggests

best to put the phone into recovery mode first though by holding down power and home button for 5 seconds and then when restarts let go of power button and hold home button for another 10 seconds. Then plug the phone into your pc and shift - restore.

I don't know how your going to do this without an Internet connection though as it won't work!!

If you mean the Pwnage tool, you can in fact download all the files you need in advance from another PC but it does take a bit more research. Good points about updating to 3.1 too OP - unless you're using an "official" O2 phone, I wouldn't really bother with it right now.

If you are an O2 customer and want to do a straight upgrade to 3.1, what I suggested should work perfectly fine.

    Cheers folks

Just to clarify -I am an official 02 user. I don't want to jailbreak it and it is currently on the standard 3GS software 3.0. I suppose all I have to do really is to download the ipsw file as you suggest from somewhere or other, transfer this to my main pc. I think I can use this on my itunes with my iphone (I think I just shift on my windows pc and select the file - isnt it?). I do have an internet connection on my main pc but its just dial up..grrr!

Yep, exactly - holding down shift and clicking "Restore" allows you to select the file rather than needing to download an update, just like I mentioned in my first post. And if you don't care about jailbreaks, unlocks, etc then yes, you can just do that through iTunes without worrying about anything else.
