Quick question -- does your Google listing improve with the more hits on a website you have?

No, not directly. (If you don't use a google service like GA, how would they know?)

However, it's widely believed that Google uses google toolbar as well as click trhough data on the organic SERPs as factors in rankings (although this is disputed).

There is anecdotal evidence about the toolbar providing some information but more likely to affect GoogleBot that the ranking system.

Hits is an outdated term - visits is far more useful and accurate and accepted.

I think the theory you're referring to is quite common with people unfamiliar with SEO/Search Engines. Then next theory/popular misconception is the one about keywords on your website etc.

SEO is quite simple: Google developed and patented a PageRank Algorithm as part of a thesis the two founders worked on before turning it into a company in 1999. The PageRank exists to this day and is central to Google's Ranking system. However, with many things, popluar misconceptions abide as people can confuse Toolbar page rank with the Ranking technology.

Basically its something like this - Pages link (vote) to each other. The strength of the vote or authority, is passed based on the relevance of the two pages. Other characteristics that can be passed are geographical relevance/authority etc.

There is no simple quick fix/magic wand, sorry.
