We have a pretty large open hallway, so I'm wondering what others have done with their new homes/renovations. Did you for for

    Tiles
    Wood
    Carpet

It's decision time for me soon and I'm stuck between tiles and wood flooring.

Went for carpet in my apartment hallway. Not I admit it's prob not as big as your hallway but I went for carpet as I felt it gave a warmer feel to it when you come in. Also thought that it could be quiet echoy if it was wood or tiles.

I've a large hallway and went for cream ceramic tiles - they give loads of light & look lovely but they're slippy as hell!
I only have them down 2 years and am so tempted to take them up and put down wooden floor instead.

I too have a very large hall and I have cream tiles - luckily mine aren't slippery though. I brought the same tiles on through the kitchen, downstairs toilet and utility room and it's very effective.
I find tiles are perfect because they look good and are safe from the 'high heel brigade'. My daughters can get ready to go out in their rooms where I have laminates, then they're on carpet on the landing and stairs until they reach the hall. High heels ruin wooden floors and this way I can (mostly) keep them off them.
My hall is a bit echoey so I'm going to buy a nice rug to match the stair carpet.

We have majority timber but I put an area of about 4ft wide * 3ft deep of tiles inside the door so that we don't have issues with water/dirt in on top of the timber.

Wood all the way. We live in a wet dirty country. You'll slip on tiles and they are high maintence. Carpet in a house hallway is dirt catcher, but I aggree more homely in an apartment. Wood is a classic for hallways.

    Wood +1

We are in the process of putting ours down.

A friend of ours has another large hallway (3,000sq ft house) and put down tiles, makes her hallway look very cold and uninviting. She is regretting putting them down

We just moved into our house and we put tiles in our hall and love them, we did the same as another poster and used the same shiny cream tiles in the kitchen and utility and its worked really well, everyone comments on how nice they are. Only problem is that our hall is double height with balcony and it is a bit echoy! Will prob carpet the stairs or something to counteract that! Good luck with the decision.

Depnding on the occupants in the house.

    Carpet for babies
    Tiles for Kids
    Wood for adults

IMO: Tiles down and carpet mat to protect kids. Lasts a life time and looks well.

Nice bright feel & simple to keep clean. Mine aren't slippy but have a high gloss finish which look really well. No problems with an echo however I do have a small rug to match the stairs to keep from walking rain / muc / mud in!

I will choose tile because compare to the two, it's more easy to clean.. And I think it's more practical to use it.. Just like in window.. I prepared to use roman shades rather than curtains..
