You are not able to transfer music from an iPod to a laptop only the other way around, find the iTunes folder on your old computer copy the folder (inside will be all of the music on you iPod only, not necessarily all of the music you own) onto your new laptop, in iTunes on the new laptop goto file>add folder to library browse to the itunes folder you have copied from you old machine and resync the iPod, to add more music just use the file>add folder and browse to each album you want to add.

Officially, that's true but there are a number of third party utilities to help you copy all the music off an iPod and onto your PC. These are listed in a sticky in the PMP forum, in this post by Karoma:

So it’s advisable to use programs to save you pulling out your hair…

    Mac-specific:
Senuti – “everything in reverse” – it offers a built-in search facility, and displays playlists. It’s essentially iTunes in reverse (Hence the name!)
OmniWeb – it’s a (Commercial) web browser. Just drag the iPod folder over and you get a nice list of folders…

    Windows-specific:
EphPod (Free, and excellent. It has been around a good while…)
    XPlay - http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/ - (Commercial – I’ve never used it TBH)
    PodUtil - http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php - (Freeware)
Anapod Explorer - http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ - Anapod Explorer lets you access your iPod's contents from any Web browser and play its music via any MP3 program of your choice. You can edit song tags directly on the iPod. It also has an embedded database engine (Anapod-SQL); so you can search the iPod using almost any criteria and generate reports in HTML or XML. (A free trial is available)
CopyTrans - www.copytrans.net - useful for retrieving your music, ratings, playlists, playcounts to your PC (14 day free trial available for download)
    SharePod - http://www.getsharepod.com/ - free your ipod.

I've used Senuti on the Mac and SharePod on Windows - both do a fine job...

I didn't want to confuse matters by introducing the OP to the range of non apple methods to copy tunes from one place to another, got the impression that OP was a novice and just needed advice on the simplest way to get music from old pc to laptop.

OP any of the above methods will work fine too, but you will still have to direct iTunes to the folder the music resides in in order to be able to turn on Genius and to add more music at a later date.

Strictly speaking this is not true,

I once charged my old ipod on a computer without itunes installed on it.

the dialgue box poped up as soon as i connected the ipod. it asked me the usual stuff view files, take no action, slideshow etc.

out of interest i clicked on view files and had a root around.

I came a cross a directory with a load of folders entitled "QSAC", "AQDP" etc.

And in each folder there was a number of music files with the WM symbol beside it so i clicked a few and turns out they were the music on the ipod playing through windows media player, while in the directory they were titled like the above folders but when played through WMP the song titles and artists came up.

I was able to copy the files with no problem at all..

Or, after you copy all the music from the iPod using one of the utilities mentioned, you can just drag and drop it into iTunes to add it to the empty library.

However, doing things this way would lose certain info, like ratings on tracks. If you can, do follow the suggestion of copying your previous iTunes library from the old PC to the new one and point iTunes to it - that way, everything should be in sync on the new system.

Good to hear you're sorted. SharePod is a great little utility to keep around for situations just like this.
