    Hi folks,

dropped my archos 5 last night and cracked the screen.

Just wondering if anyone here knows if it's possible to replace an archos screen yourself or is it a case of having to send the unit back to Archos to have it repaired ?

    Any help would be appreciated.

You can, but you'll be hard pressed to actually find the screen....AFAIR the screen is made by samsung but not sure where you'd source it outside of buying another A5 (faulty on ebay perhaps). I think the total cost for replaced screen including postage from archos is €110, a hefty wad and if I was in your situation i'd think long and hard about saving that money and putting it towards the android enabled A5

    Cheers Mactard,

I can't afford to buy another Archos at the moment tbh and I don't think I'll be buying another unless they sort out the terrible user interface on the 5.
The lack of hardware buttons is terrible.

Thanks for the advice. I might just try and source a screen on ebay so.

    cheers.

On closer inspection it appears that the screen itself is fine but a thin glass overlay the covers the screen is cracked ?

    Any thoughts ?

Wanna post some pictures of the damaged screen so we can inspect it?

Looks like the glass only; any chance it's easy to replace?

    I sincerely Hope so Spocker!

Tho the new "5" is 299 euro for the 16gb model...

I believe the screen and glass touchpanel are all-in-one, so the whole thing needs replacing. They are very easy to replace, no soldering etc required, but also very hard to find...and expensive.

The Archos 5s are heavily discounted now on ebay, so im not sure it'd be worth buying a screen. If you look at the prices of screens for the old 605s etc on ebay, they're 60, 70 euro.... I can see the screen for the A5 costing over €100 if you can find one.

Off-topic, but that new one (with Android) is supposed to be awful prone to crashing.

Cheers for the info Voodu Child.

Special cheers for the heads up on the new model too ! damn.

Apparently it will cost me around 120euro to get it repaired by archos.

I will pay that much as it's a gadget I cannot be without at the moment!

I use it every day (or used to)

damn... I mean it's good when used in the recording dock, it's just no good as a portable player at the moment.

So you're going to pay the €120 for repairs?....ouch man, that's gotta hurt! I guess you'll want some sort of rugged armour-esque case for the A5 now too! I'm dying to get the Nokia N900 but threads like these always scare the life outta me.

    I'm lost without it Mac,

I use it every day in work, and now I have resorted to using my iphone to browse... (sad I know)
Weirdly, I use a 4Gamers Ds Lite case from Game to house the archos normally, when it's in the glove compartment in the car etc. It's a perfect fit and very rugged, but the problem is I didn't have it in the case when I dropped it :/.

At least I can still use it as a portable hdd and also in the tv recording dock.

For the record, the email I got from Archos regarding shipping the 5 to them is a tad long winded... I'm going to have to print it out and read it once or twice ... sh|t loads of instructions. (Unbeleivable)

The advice has been very much appreciated guys... I'm hoping to have her back up and running soon enough.

Have you tried the Irish Distributor of Archos Products,I'm not sure if they can do anything for you apart from sending it back to Archos but it might be worth a try.

I finally got a quote from Archos yesterday, two weeks after posting. It's going to cost 112E including delivery.
Luckily for me a friend is paying for the repairs.
