High expectations vs under delivering?

On the face of it, there seems to be more and more complaints about the organisation of events.

Is it that participants have too high expectations or that organisers over promise & under deliver?

When i started to have an interest in marathon running in 2007, there were only 5 marathons taking place each year ( i think!): Dublin, Longford, Connemarathon, Cork and Belfast. One of the challenge was to ran all the Irish marathons in the year. Then Newry came along, then many more marathons and half. TBH, i have lost track of all marathons and half marathons that have taken place in 2009.

There seems to be one organised by every town and village in this country. Unfortunately, not everybody can successfully organised and run such events.
One of the issue seems that too often, a last minute race, e.g. half and full distance, is tagged on the back of the real event being organised, like 5k or 10k race. "Ah it'll be grand. Just add a cone 13miles down the road. Mary will stand there, give them a glass of water and tell them to do a u-turn!".

Pity, the Irish landscape is getting polluted with quantity rather than quality races.

But i hope that a natural selection will take place, bad race will disappear while good races, thanks to the hard work of competent organisers and dedicated volunteers, will come out even stronger and better.
To those who consistently deliver on their promises, THANK YOU.
