Just on my home from a meeting in Dublin this evening,on the old road between Athlone and Ballinasloe,a massive Red stag crossed the road about 100 yrds in front of me,full antlers, big adult. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I had heard rumours they were around that area but I passed little heed. Where the hell are these guys coming from, they hardly made there way down from Wicklow or Kerry. I wonder if theres many around there. I wouldnt have any interest in hunting them, just curious to know where they originated from and if there actually breeding well up there.

in wexford we have a few pockets of reds as would most countys .there mostly farm animals gone wild .
thats why were getting some massive Hungarian type heads ,one seen not so long ago in the back of a red pick up truck.
lovely sight, keep its exact location to your self ,or the boys in the red pick up truck will move in.

we are in the full mating season and stags are covering an incredible amount of mileage between 15 sept and 15 Oct. From experience in France a Stag can cover more than 50 km in one night to look for hinds of femals.

Your sighting might significate that the population is expanding and stags are reaching unusual places during the mating season.

Dont limit yourself to red pickups. I met a guy once in a Mercedes S300,
Dressed in a suit with wife and kids in the car. Looked to anyone like a family on there way to Mass. I heard a shot and decided to follow up on where it came from. I could see down from the road I was on to a low road that the guy dressed to the 9s was our unconspicuous drive by shooter. The moral of the story is dont be fooled by what you see.

it actually happened to me yesterday morning.
Have a lease somewhere in the west so went for a walk early with no rifle as i didn't get it yet. Was walking in the middle of nowwhere when i saw a familly car driving by . The guy was as surprise as me seeing somebody else arround at 7 am on sunday morning, it was on a path leading to nowhere , not a road. We had a short talk and he took off. Heard a big bang 30 minutes later.....

I know this is kinda off topic slightly but i went out with a friend recently early on a saturday morning. he brought me off on my first experience stalking deer. on our travels through the wood(@ 6:30am) we came across an asshole wit his car and trailer backed into gap getting ready to dump all the rubbish in his trailer out on the ground.

I cant imagine the fright he must have gotten when he saw us walkin towards him, and we all dressed up the the camo and my mate with gun on his shoulder. we through a few f*#ks into him and he wasn't long scampering off.

Gave his reg to a friend of the family who's a garda and let them deal with him. Anyone else ever comeacross strange stuff early in the morning when ye're out on walkabouts.......
