im buying a grey suit soon for a holiday.the suit will only be worn at night, its not for a business occassion.anyways im clueless, i didnt think it really mattered on the colour of the shoes but a few friends have said brown is the way to go all the time unless your suit is black.this true?

Match your shoes to your belt, scarf or shirt

I would definitely go with black shoes rather than brown with a grey suit! Or, as someone else said, match the shoes to your accessories ... but I don't think brown would look great at all.

It also depends on how cheap the suit it, and how good looking you are.

But in general, play it safe, so black shoes, black belt.

It depends on the shade of grey.

(Forgive me if I'm wrong in the assumption that you are a man...)
Traditionally brown shoes are for the day and black for evening wear. Black always will look better no matter what the occasion, formal or informal and black will fit with any colour suit. So, I'd say get a pair of balck shoes and you'll be set for all occasions.
If you want to 'relax' the suit wear a black loafer.
As mentioned above be sure to match your belt and watch strap (if wearing a leather strap) to your shoes.
Then, remember that it's also good to break with tradition. A pair of brown oxfords or brogues worn with a tweed jacket will see you through everything but the most formal of occasions.
Above all, keep 'em clean and polished!

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I think if the suit is a lighter shade of grey then light brown/tan shoes look much better IMHO. But if it's a darker grey then black all the way.
