Slow to boot up and freezes after a few mins - require a forced power down?

    Any ideas? Thanks.

    P.S. Running Vista.

Could be anything really. We need more info, is it getting excessively hot when powered on? Try booting into safe mode and running a virus scan.

could be faulty chipset, cpu, ram and so on, the possibilities are endless.

OP did this only happen recently ? like after a download or internet browsing ?

was it like that when you first had the laptop ?

    all details possible please :)

I had the same problem, i did not do anything about it until my laptop finally crashed. I had to call Dell support and deal with an Indian selling me a warranty and extra memory. in the end i paid for a 3 year warranty (220) which included an engineer coming to my home to fix the problem. Something to do with the mother board. The mother board was replaced. Apparently its a common problem with the 1525 so if your still in warranty get it sorted

This is only a recent phenomenon. Was OK until a few weeks ago. Unsure if its related to a recent upgrade? Running Symantec NIS so I'd be surprised if there's a Virus on there? Don't think it's hardware or heat fault either.....

'Running Symantec NIS so I'd be surprised if there's a Virus on there? '
Norton is not at all as good as it is cranked up to be.
I would suggest you download Avast Free:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
install it and allow it to do a bootscan on reboot. You will see how much Norton is missing. Best to Google questionable items especially if they are in the OS files. I move infections to the chest where they are quarantined. Then if the PC boots up fine they can always be deleted later, especially if you want to continue using Norton. After deleting the viruses, you can always uninstall Avast.
If that doesn't cleam out the problem, you can always run Malwarebytes:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
    and remove all it finds
    Good Luck

Thanks - Installed both programs and ran them both. Removed some infections that were picked up. Fan is working properly so I guess its not a heat/hardware fault. Starts and runs quickly in SAFE MODE but takes a while to start and run normally? Norton seems to be OK.
I will run it for a while and see if it freezes during normal use.....

    back up your data,
reinstall windows OR restore from dell partition (dell support will explain how)

this rules out all software problem possabilities, viruses, bugs, bad patches, bad applications.

if your computer still fails, it is a hardware problem.

download tools to test CPU and memory, the ubuntu live boot CD comes with free memchecking tool on the boot screen for this.

How to check your fan - IS YOUR LAPTOP HOT?
-your fan may be spinning but your heatsync (radiator) may be clogged with crap if your laptop is older than 2 years. the fan can be spinning but the air goes nowhere.
