Repeating Externally at DIT & registration fees

    Hi guys,
Just a quick question regarding the above.

My bf failed 2 subjects and is repeating them externally - he won't be attending lectures, labs etc, just literally sitting the exams - 1 at xmas and 1 in summer - and hopefully progressing into 3rd year.
According to his course coordinator, he has to pay full registration fees - €1500 - to repeat externally.

As far as he's aware,he wont get a student card, get to use library, attend lectures etc, so why does he have to pay?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm a bit confused - €1500 seems like a lot just to sit 2 x 2 hour exams!!!
    Thanks!!

On topic, I believe the €1500 fee is nothing to do with DIT, and is more to do with the government. All students pay it regardless of the amount of subjects they do or the course they take, except part-time students who pay full subject fee's anyway.

thanks for the replies guys - it just seems a bit much considering he'll get no benefit from any of the college's facilities, bar sitting 2 exams - also afaik, part of the registration fee's go to the SU - if he's an external student, he wont benefit from any of the SU facilities etc - so is there any reason for paying that part of the fee's?? Just a bit confused... :)

I'm being helpful. There's no way she should have to pay that fee. She should fight having to pay it until the end. I would also like to point out that my previous statement was entirely correct. The DIT administration are beyond retarded. Having registered online about three weeks ago, I finally went to get my student card today only to get grief about being late from the office staff. I quickly pointed out that the bank giro to pay the fees issued 22nd September had only been posted by DIT yesterday. Went down and got my student card of the dude who looks like a serial killer after his three hour lunch break/masturbation session. Fuck DIT in hell forever.

    Hi Becah

I lecture in DIT and am a year coordinator and I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay that fee to repeat externally. I would definitely check that out.

    Hiya,

Some great constructive posts in here today...

As far as I am aware your boyfriend will not have to pay the €1500. That money is a registration fee, some of it goes to the Government, some of it to DIT, some of it to Campus Life, some of it to Clubs & Socs and some of it to the SU. However, your boyfriend isn't registering as such.

Again, as far as I know, he will just have to pay the repeat fee to resit each exam. That's around €150 I think... Your boyfriend should drop into the SU on his campus and check it out, they will help him out no hassle

You do not have to pay the captitation fee if you are repeating externally because you will not get any DIT services (no PC, library access etc).
The fee for repeating externally is 200 euro irrespective of how many subjects you are externally repeating and is listed here: http://www.dit.ie/media/documents/campuslife/FeeRates200910.pdf

That fee only applies if you are just externally repeating. If you are attending lectures for other subjects or if you are carrying subjects then its different.

Guys thanks so much for all the replies, he went into the office in Bolton Street to see what the story is, and he was told that the first person he was talking to on the phone was mistaken, and he in fact does not have to pay the registration fees, just the repeat fees. Good thing he double checked! Thanks again!
