iPhone OS 3.1.2 software has just been released by Apple, would appear to be nothing major...

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

    - Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
    - Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
    - Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

Basic bug fixes - If you Jailbreak or rely of Redsn0w to unlock your iPhone, 3G or 3GS... DO NOT UPDATE until the Dev Team releases a new version of the PwnageTool. Keep checking the website for updates, it will come out quiet soon I imagine.

Very true (a lot of people are still on 3.0 or older) but as they always warn, we don't know what else is hidden in the update that could possible prevent an unlock in the future - better be safe that sorry you know? There's an unreal amount of people depending on their unlocks :)

For sure! I'm on of those people depending on it! :) Although, to be honest it takes so much effort there'd wanna be a lot of change to go through it all for an update!

    Jailbroken version out
This assumes you have not upgraded yet.
go to xsellize.com and download the files
    iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore for IPhone 3G
    Fully exit from itunes
    Download iReb
    Launch iReb
Hold the power button and Home button for 10 sec with the home button still pressed move finger away from power button. Keep home button pressed for 10 secs
In iReb select your iphone (IPhone 3G)
    Wait for the white screen
    Launch itunes from ireb
(at this stage ireb may crash after itunes is launched, thats ok)
    Shift + restore in itunes,
    select your customer restore file
    away you go.

this worked for me and the baseband was not changed.
    Now using jailbroken 3.1.2

more info can be found on xsellize.com

When using this method, did you need to re-install your apps and reconfigure everything ? I've got a load of custom cydia apps and tweaks on mine which is currently on 3.0 and I really couldn't be bothered updating to 3.1.2 if it means I'd have to re-install everything. A major headache and I doubt very much I'd get it back to the way I have it right now.

Haven't bothered putting on 3.1 yet.
And there's nothing in this one that'll push me to update to this either.

theres an app from cydia called pkg backup, costs a couple of dollars. I mentioned it on another thread, it will reinstall all your cydia apps automatically in one shot. Makes the job of restoring alot easier, still a small bit of tweaking etc afterwards, but it really takes the pain out of it.
