    I think its the following via Ethernet and the drop down should also have Wireless option.

    system Preferences -> Network -> Built-in Ethernet -> PPPoE.

    Almost correct, you don't use PPPoE. Click TCP/IP and make sure Configure IPV4 is set to DHCP and your IP address should be in like 192.168.1.x, Router should be 192.168.1.254.

    Hi Con

    Do you have another machine (PC or mac) that you can test both the cable and the netopia with?

    The only time I've seen this is dodgy cables/ports on modem or just yesterday the trackpad/ethernet on a 17" macbookpro failed, took mac apart, cleaned then figured out the battery bay and the battery where heavily distorted, took battery out, kinda heavy handed the mbp back into shape, did the usual /sbin/fsck and safeboot, rebooted all worked fine, albeit ordered new battery as the old one was a serious hazard.

    Anyway, let me know if you can test and test successfully with another machine.

    plug it in to the ethernet socket at the back, down in the task bar to the right at the bottom of the screen you'll see an icon like two little computers, they'll be flashing and you'll also get a popup balloon saying local network connected, try browsing the internet and see if that works, if not then there's a possibility that the cable may be damaged.
