So why did you start your own business?

Simple question. I've spoken to several people over the past few weeks on this subject and got lots of different reasons. So I thought I'd throw it out to boards entrepreneurs. For those on here who haven't actually started their own business I suppose the question to you is why would /will you? You can select more than one.

    I want all the money.
I can't stand having somebody telling me what to do / looking over my shoulder.
I like the freedom of being self employed.
    I love working 60+ hours a week.
I had no choice as I couldn't get a job.

    I want all the money.
    - it will take 5-10 years to make good money, if you make it
I can't stand having somebody telling me what to do / looking over my shoulder.
    - you will have customers telling you what to do, they are now your boss
I like the freedom of being self employed.
    - it will be a while before you can take a holiday, go sick, even then any problems and you have to deal with them night or day
    I love working 60+ hours a week.
    - get a life
I had no choice as I couldn't get a job
    - finding a job even in this market is easier than starting a business

    Completely disagree.

Assuming you have an idea, starting a business is one of the easiest processes in the world in this country. Register with CRO.ie and you basically have a trading name.

Finding a job in the current market is not being exaggerated, it's incredibly tough at the moment. You might be able to walk into a direct door to door sales job but you'll be walking straight back out the following week unless you are insane or an incredibly good sales person or, you actually enjoy what you are selling which is quite rare these days.

And this is taking into account you are educated, possess good levels of overall intelligence and are presentable and professional etc etc, oh and let's not forget the 5 years of said experience which most young people in the early twenties who went to college simply do not have.

    +1 to all that.

Anybody can start a business but it takes someone a bit special to keep it making profit year after year. There are people out there who haven't a clue quite frankly. Filling out the forms is the easy bit.

Entrapreneurs would be the first to admit that they have no life. And I'm sure they would like to spend more time with family etc given the choice but for them it's a way of life; it's what makes them tick.

I'd agree with all that except the freedom bit. You do work longer hours, but I do find I have much more freedom working for myself. If I need to shoot off somewhere for a few hours, I just do it. I don't have to go and ask anyone. This morning for example, I met a friend who was around for the weekend, for an hour for breakfast and gave them a spin to teh airport.

RE the holidays etc. I have found, that is just a mental attitude that a lot of business owners have (myself included). They are almost scared to leave the business. You can of course take holidays. Just pick two weeks, book a holiday and go. The world won't end while you are gone. You can check in by phone, e-mail etc if you want to. At the end of the day, the business is never going to grow if you are the person doing everything. The sooner you can start delegating part of the work to someone else, the sooner you will be able to get on with growing the business.

RE: Why I started my own business....

Just saw an opportunity and went for it. It was at a time in my life when I was going moving job anyway so I decided I'd try it for a while..
