Ok I was wondering the legal difference between a stament say you need to pay or a bill say from ESB which is a service.

    Many thanks Gary

Sorry about this, but the above makes no sense.

I will be more clear then.

A TV licence comes as a statment that you need to pay E160

A Bill from the ESB say you own for the elctricty used.

Why do we not get a bill for the TV licence for service of providing TV and radio etc.

    Clear my friend?:)

    No. Not clear.

A statement - is the status of the client’s account at a particular point in time. Each line item on a statement represents either a bill or a payment. As such, it doesn’t offer as much detail as a bill – but it does show payments made towards the account. Statements are often sent out on a regular basis (e.g., monthly – like your credit card statement) to show your clients where they stand (and if they still owe you any money).

My understanding is that a TV licence might appear in that format due to arrears.

No its due to be renewed on 31st Oct. I am asking becasue I don't think you can get a bill for TV lience. I was following up the fact that its not a bill due to it not being a service but more of a tax. Should it be call a tax and statment seems like a sugestion more then telling you what you own.

I feel it is statue law and not civil or criminal law. I am unsure about the difference but am trying to look into it.

    Thanks for your help :)

I think it is a statement (or a reminder) that you must renew your licence, but not in the ordinary business sense of the word i.e. a statement of your account as Tom Young mentioned already.

As regards your bit about statute law, I haven't a clue what you mean!

As others have said, it is neither a bill or a statement, & can't really be compared to a utility bill or bank statement in realistic terms.

It is a Television Licence Renewal Notice issued by An Post TV Licence Records Office.

‘This correspondence relates to the television apparatus held at the above address’

Then there is a section headed ‘Statement/Ráiteas’ which states when the current TV licence expires, when the new Licence will expire, the ‘please pay by’ date & the fee amount.

On the bottom of the renewal notice is attached a payment slip which can be detached & used for payment at a post office, or attached to a cheque payment to identify the Licence. On the reverse is a direct debit mandate which can be signed & given to the Licence holder’s bank.

So, IMO it is neither a bill or a statement – it is a renewal notice, plain & simple. It's similar to the renewal notices that used to be sent out for Driver's Licence renewals.

Gar22, life is short, so don't get too concerned about statements and bills. People to whom you owe money won't let you forget it.

Get out more, take up a hobby, find or rediscover your significant other.

I mean this as kindly advice from an experienced lawyer. I would say the same to any client who raised the same queries.
