RobFowl posted it in another thread, but it deserves a thread of its own. Great honest interview.

He was trying to find the right words about his time at CCC, I think we got what he was saying. A bit sad really, he could have been more prominant but fair play to him.

Very good - it must have been be soul destroying to be clean and competing against 'alleged' junkies like Ulrich and co.
Fair play though he doesn't seem bitter,.

Hold on a minute - how do we know who is clean and who is dirty?

Do we know David McCann is clean?

    Only David McCann knows.

Well those weren't the usual weasel words of a doper or doping apologist.

IIRC it was suspected that the substance came from a nutritional supplement that had been contaminated with norandrosterone (certainly not listed on the label.) I believe a whole bunch of British athletes sponsored by this particular supplement manufacturer but otherwise unrelated tested positive for the same substance around the same time.

Unfortunately for him the athlete is ultimately responsible for anything found in his system, however it got there.

I believe this explanation was taken into consideration and is why he was given the minimum ban.

    See here for example:

You recollection is right Blorg, there was a contamination of supplements which quite a few people fell foul to.

On the subject of competing against dopers, I know of another Irish rider who rode for an outfit on the continent. With increased unhappiness at the *goings on* he quit the sport altogether only to see people he would beat easily and regularly (Jan Ullrich) suddenly start to win things. One of his team mates told me how on the first few days of a race they would ride the continental guys into the ground but on the latter days they would be dropped spectacularly as the other guys took off "as if they were riding motorbikes".

Fair point, but usually dopers tend not to be hypocrits.

Of course they can be hypocrits!

Isn't it hypocritical to stand on a podium and accept the flowers if you get there with dope!??!

By definition they are hypocrits
    Possibly haematocrit's as well
FWIW I believe McCann is clean but thats my opinion.

I stand corrected, i meant of course hypocritical to the point of criticising other dopers. Our own Sean Kelly for example  will suddenly become very deaf & dumb when the subject is brought up - having admitted to doping himself.
