According to wikipedia the 400 had a Honda engine up till 1999, but with Automatic gearbox only. Is this correct?

When was the last of the Honda engined manuals?

I think the Honda engine with the manual gearbox finished in the previous generation 200/400 up until 1995. I think the last model 400 only carried the Honda engine with the auto box, that was replaced in 2000 when it became the 45 and the auto became a CVT mated to the 1.8 K-Series engine.

Were you considering buying a 400? Awful car, I haven't driven anything as bad as that in a long time. Wobbles all over the shop. Tbh the K-series engine is the only redeeming feature of the car :D

No, a cousin was being offered one (a '98 or '99) for free but he'd have to travel to get it. He was only interested in it if it had a Honda engine as he didn't want the hassle of the contrary Rover engine, what with head gaskets etc etc.

Or anyone with a pair of eyes. 5 door 95 on Civic was the same as the 400/45. But more reliable:D

BMW bought Rover in 1994? To my understanding, Honda had no interest in doing business with BMW, and as a result BMW wanted Honda out of the picture as quickly as possible as they had to pay royalties on Honda designs and technology used in every Rover built. Hence the Honda engines were largely out of the picture by 1995 (I think).

    In wikipedia about the 45/400:
The Rover 45 design is controlled by Honda, and the company is believed to have seized schematics and tooling relating to the 45 and ZS shortly before MG Rover was sold to Nanjing Automobile Group.

Interesting, if it's true, since a lot of the design dates from the 1989 Honda Domani.

Hence why the Honda was more reliable - they used their own petrol engines.

Interesting the bought the tooling and stuff though:cool:
