I have never had one of these, but I believe all they'll want are employee contracts and records of hours worked. In fact, I'd suggest you call them and ask them what they want to see.

They have a guide to inspections on their website.

    Employment contracts
Working hours (holidays, public holidays) and breaks recorded, google 'OWT1' form
    Payslips and minimum wage

What business sector are you in, they check different things for different sectors in more detail.

They come in at an arranged time and check your records. They are looking to see that the staff are getting the appropriate rates of pay, that they are getting holiday money and the like.

They want to see the rosters and the wage slips for comparison.

The two guys that came to me, noticed I was running a shop on beyond skeleton staffing so they advised me of my deficiancies (spelling?) They were very reasonable and allowed me to sort out the couple of issues they came upon.

If you take the mickey, I am sure they can turn nasty. These heads have a warrant to see any documents they want to inspect, so try not to P them off.

If you want to chat, PM me

Today at work i am being asked to provide my passport so my employer can copy it to have on file in the event of a NERA inspection .i've looked at the Nera website and could find nothing that says he has to hold this information .Has anyone else been asked to do this and is it legal ?

Well, it sounds plausible. NERA will probably check to ensure that any foreign staff are legally employed, including visas and so forth, so having a copy of your passport will prove that you're English and therefore permitted to work here.

Your employer is supposed to have a record of your date of birth. So a birth cert or passport should suffice. If you're a foreign national, he needs to know that you're actually from the EU; or that you have a right to work here, which I assume is mentioned on your passport somewhere.
