    Hi all,

Have a problem with my wife's 2002 Clio - when she tried to start it - all lights went on and dials started jumping up and down. Didn't see it for myself - but it made a strange noise and didn't sound like the engine was turning over.

Anybody know what this might be???
She said that she left no lights on etc.

    Cheers,
    Keith.

Sounds like undervoltage effects, more than likely a flat/low battery.

If it made a clicking noise, it coould be just a flat battery..... The slightly colder weather coming in now with kill thousands of batterys that were fine up to now

+1 on the dying battery. I have a 2002 Renault Megane, and exactly the same thing manifested itself (dials go loopy, weird clicking noises out of the dashboard, etc), and it was due to a short-circuit within the battery. One new battery + replacement fuse later, and it's all working fine again.

Jeez that was quick - thanks all!

She did say that some helpful guy had jumpleads and it started! Had never heard of needles jumping like that though.

Maggy - out of interest - what fuse did you replace?

Was one within the injection control system. After we jump-started the car to get it going, the injection fault light periodically came on (along with the 'STOP' light). The battery also wouldn't charge (due to the short-circuit we didn't know about), so after the "drive to charge" that you should always do after jumpstarting, it remained completely dead. As such, after discussing it with a garage, we got it towed in to get sorted.
