Lurker here. Looking at doing a complete service on my new car, want to switch to fully synthetic high quality engine oil(from 10w40 semi synth to 0w40 fully synth).

Can't find any relatively cheap suppliers of it, Halfords seem to be the cheapest and I can't believe that that's correct.

Any suggestions on where to try?

dont take halfords oil, depenig on your car you may need fully synthetic oil. check you car manual or ring the dealer. some newer cars cant run on older car oil. ring any motor factors or audi dealership for the best oil, using cheap stuff doest pay off when you ruin your big ends or crank!

He was talking about Mobil 1 from halfords but anyway there is nothing wrong with halfords own brand oil. I know a few people using it and find it good. Its made by some other company whose name escapes me now.

Actually, Halfords own brand is recommended by some owner's clubs, Alfa for one, you'be suprised in the differing qualities between this and some 'name' brands.

BTW Halfords oil meets Mercedes and Audi standards so if it's ok with them ;)

I've used Bardahl semi in a Skoda Octavia TDI for nearly 300k miles, their fully synthetic in Vito for over 60k miles and I'm back using their semi in a Ford Ranger and a Caddy now. It's at least 20% cheaper than Castrol and Mobil and never had any complaints. Just about any sizeable motorfactors stocks it.

If you're looking for some realy hard to get stuff give Lusk Motorfactors or the motorfactors on the Forrest Road in Swords a shout ( same company ). They tend to stock a wide range of high end lubricants.

I checked online before buying my oil in Halfords. Just to make sure they were not charging crazy money for what i was getting.

Tesco sell oil although I don't recall seing 0w40. I think they do 5w40 and 0w30. Brand does not matter when it comes to oil.

Recently got 6 litres of 10w40 mineral oil for 23 quid. It has a ACEA A2 rating and is OK to use in my Laguna once I change the oil every 12k or less (if an ACEA A3 oil is used, oil change intervals are 18k)

I have an s60 2.0T and was wondering what oil is best. The motor factor said either semi or fully synthetic,... with a bit of a price difference.

I assume fully would prob be better for the engine but will it have any issues you think with semi? since it says it can take it is it better to splash out or perfectly fine with semi?

I've been told, but don't take this as gospel, that for most normal cars there's only a difference between semi-synth and fully synth when it comes to longer service intervals i.e. the fully synth will last much longer before degrading, but for short/normal service intervals they're pretty much identical.

More myths about oil than any other service item...

Stick to what the manufacturer has recommended is my advice.

Using fully synthetic in an engine that was not designed for it can cause problems, although it seems that using the "best" available is a good route to go in reality it doesn't always work out that way.

EG, some fully synthetic oils don't have the heat transfer ability of a mineral or semi-synthetic, this leads to hotspots and premature wear.

PS I learned the hard way :(

Use the recommended oil and change it regularily.
