Essential PS3 Games *No Discussion*

    READ THIS POST FIRST!!!!

This is an essential PS3 game recommendation thread. The idea being, if you want a list of essential PS3 games, you can take a gander at this thread and see what others recommend. And if you want to recommend something yourself, you can either start a new post or endorse one of the games already posted.

So this is how it will (or should) work. If you want to post about a game that hasn’t been mentioned here already, create a new post and fill in the following information:

    Name:
    Developer:
Availability: (PS3 Exclusive, PSN Title, Multi Platform etc...)
    Genre: (FPS, RPG, Simulations etc...)
Description: (General overview of the game)
Like this? Then try this: (If you like this game, try ******. Similar recommendations.)
Links: (Official Links, Wiki page, Gamefaqs etc...)

This should be the only information you put in a post. If there’s important information that you feel should be included, then go ahead but try and make it relevant. And don’t write about more than one game per post, so that each game can be thanked separately.

If you want to recommend a game that someone else has posted already, then all you have to do is thank that post (the little thumbs up icon in the bottom right of each post).

Important: This is NOT a discussion thread. If you want to talk about a specific game then start your own thread. Just keep to the game's details and everything should work out fine.

If you want to discuss this thread, then there's a thread here. If you find information in a post that is wrong, either point it out in the link above, or PM the poster. Note that posts can only be edited up to 2 days after originally being posted. After that, it's up to a mod, and they have better things to do with their time (well, they should!).

    Name: Valkyria Chronicles
    Developer: Sega
    Availability: PS3 Exclusive
    Genre: Tactical RPG
    Description:
In the year 1935 E.C., the continent of Europa is dominated by two superpowers: The Autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance in the east and a commonwealth of loosely allied democracies known as the Atlantic Federation in the west. The economies of both powers depend on a precious multi-purpose mineral called Ragnite. Its growing scarcity results in the Empire declaring war on the Federation, sparking the Second Europan War. The Empire uses its military superiority to quickly put the Federation on the defensive. Emboldened by their progress and momentum, the Empire decides to invade the neutral Principality of Gallia in order to seize its rich Ragnite deposits.

When Imperial forces launch an attack on the Gallian border town of Bruhl, Welkin Gunther, son of late General Belgen Gunther, is forced to fight for his life alongside the town watch captain, Alicia Melchiott. Together with Welkin's adopted sister Isara and using Belgen's tank, the Edelweiss, they escape to Gallia's capital, Randgriz, and subsequently join the country's militia forces. Welkin is given the rank of lieutenant and assumes command of the newly-formed Squad 7, with Alicia acting as his non-commissioned officer.

    Name: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
    Developer: Naughty Dog
    Availability: PS3 Exclusive
    Genre: Action/Adventure/Puzzler
    Description:
Created by Naughty Dog, developers of the Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter series, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is a third-person action/adventure title, in the mould of Tomb Raider. The game stars Nathan Drake, a descendant of Sir Francis Drake, the explorer, who is on a quest to find the lost city of El Dorado. Accompanying Drake is his friend, Sully and reporter Elena. The story follows the trio to a Pacific island where they meet others who want to find the city for other, more sinister reasons.

The voice acting and motion-capture performances in the game are fantastic. Nolan North has become a well-known name in the world of gaming because of his performance as Nathan Drake. He oozes charisma and has a quick wit, adding plenty of humour to proceedings.

The gameplay is also simple and well-executed. The balance between the over-the-shoulder gunplay, made popular in Gears of War, and platforming exploration, first perfected by Tomb Raider, is handled well, with minor flaws that do not distract too much from the fun of the experience. The controls, while initially cumbersome, eventually become natural. The rather blunt transitions between exploration sections and firefights can jar the senses, but do not dull the enjoyment of the game.

The soundtrack also needs mentioning as it is superb. The music was created by Greg Edmonson, the composer who worked on the Firefly TV series. He has a very distinctive sound that suits the game world well. The noise of the jungle environment is also implemented well, immersing the player into the game further.

Overall, though the game has flaws, the sheer fun and enjoyment gained outweighs any issues to make this an exceptional game. The lenght of the game is a issue, however I have replayed it a number of times and it is still a lot of fun. It is quite cheap to pick up and the sequel will be released soon so now is a perfect time to invest or replay the game.

    Developer: ThatGameCompany
    Availability: PSN
    Genre: Poetic Adventure
    Description:
Each level takes place in a different flower's dream as it sits on the windowsill of a dull city apartment. As the player progresses through the game, the apartment and city gradually becomes more vibrant and colourful, until it climaxes at the 100% completion mark and the cityscape is replaced by a vibrant field with mountains in the background. The player guides a petal through brightly coloured, abstract fields by tilting the motion-sensitive controller; pressing any button on the controller gives a speed boost. The aim is to guide the petal into other flowers in the field, triggering an explosion of colour that spreads through the game world.

Flower utilizes the Sixaxis motion controls in the PlayStation 3 controller, and it is used to direct the flower petals around the map.

    Genre: Action/Adventure
    Description:

    ninja_gaiden_2_sigma_6.jpg
We always hear from developers that they've upped the scale, scope and all-round epic nature of their game for the sequel. So and so game has twice as many levels, another has bigger bosses, another includes some new moves. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a game that has more variety than you could ever imagine, a storyline that spans the globe, enemies so diverse you expect something new around every corner, combat so brutal you'll be wincing until the closing credits and a style that is effortlessly cool. Ninja Gaiden 2 was more bad ass than its predecessor in every conceivable way, and this PS3 exclusive refresh is even better... for the most part.
If you haven't been following the Ninja Gaiden series over the past few years you probably aren't prepared for how difficult Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is, even if it's definitely easier than the 360 original. It's still on a completely different level to current genre favourite God of War. To put Ninja Gaiden 2 into perspective, I was able to beat God of War and its sequel fairly comfortably on the default difficulty - on the easiest difficulty Ninja Gaiden 2 almost made me gnaw my fingers off at certain points. Newcomers will definitely appreciate Sigma 2's more forgiving gameplay, but unless you're 100 per cent focused don't expect to make it very far.

The story takes place in a fictional near-future, where a radical leader has staged a coup d'état in the Middle East, and an "Ultranationalist" movement has instigated a civil war in Russia. The events of the conflicts are seen from the perspectives of an American Marine and a British SAS commando, and are set in multiple locations, including the Middle East, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Prypiat, Ukraine. The multiplayer portion of the game features various game modes, and contains a leveling system that allows the player to unlock additional weapons, weapon attachments, and camouflage schemes as they advance.

The game was given considerable praise, receiving an aggregated score of 94% from both Game Rankings and Metacritic. The gameplay, multiplayer, and story received particular praise, while criticism targeted what was perceived as an inability to revolutionize the first-person shooter genre. The game won numerous awards from gaming websites, including IGN's Best Xbox 360 Game. It was the top-selling game worldwide for 2007, reaching over seven million copies by January 2008, and over 13 million by May 2009.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, commonly abbreviated to MGS4, is a stealth action video game developed by Kojima Productions. In MGS4, the player assumes the role of Old Snake, utilizing stealth, CQC and traditional combat techniques. The OctoCamo suit mimics the appearance and texture of any surface, decreasing the probability of Snake being noticed. The Solid Eye device highlights items and enemies, and can operate in Night Vision and Binocular mode. Metal Gear Mk.II, later substituted by Mk.III, offers CODEC functionality and a means to the in-game menu for a large part of Snake's mission. It can be remote controlled to stun enemies, provide reconnaissance and interact with the environment.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is set five years after the Big Shell incident, in 2014. The world economy relies on continuous war, fought by PMCs, which outnumber government military forces. PMC soldiers are outfitted with nanomachines to enhance their abilities and control the battlefield. The control network created through these nanomachines is called Sons Of the Patriots (SOP), and Liquid Ocelot is preparing to hijack the system. Snake accepts a request from Roy Campbell to terminate Liquid, with Otacon and Sunny providing mission support from the Nomad aircraft.

Metal Gear Solid 4 includes the Starter Pack for Metal Gear Online. MGO features up to 16 player online tactical battles and incorporates several gameplay elements from MGS4, including the SOP system that allows players to have a visual confirmation of their teammates' position and battle status.

    Genre: Racing

    burnout-paradise-55584.463801.jpg

    Description:
Burnout Paradise is the seventh game in the Burnout video game series. It was released in January 2008. It has an open world set in the fictional Paradise City. For races, players may take any route to get to the destination. Races and other events are started by stopping at any of the 120 traffic lights around Paradise City and applying the accelerator and brake at the same time.

There are two different types of crash based on the car's condition after the crash. If the player's car manages to retain all four wheels, and not break its chassis, the player may drive out of the crash and continue playing; this is called a "driveaway". If a player's car loses any of its wheels, has the engine damaged too much from an impact, or winds up outside of the game's map, the car is in a "wrecked" state and the player will have to wait until his car is reset.

Burnout Paradise is also available for download on the PlayStation Store. A large number of DLC packs, most initial ones being free, have added day-and-night cycles, motorbikes and trophies to the game, as well as endearing the Burnout community and fans to the game's developers, Criterion.

    Description:
"Before BioWare amassed a following among console gamers with games like Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect, the developer already had a significant fanbase. These gamers loved the studio for its work on the PC series Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights – tactical, story-driven RPGs with an emphasis on party mechanics. No developer did that style of game better in those days, and Dragon Age: Origins proves that BioWare isn't giving up the crown. Dragon Age brilliantly combines the genre's old-school conventions with a few modern twists to create one of the most addictive and expansive RPGs of its kind."

Dragon Age: Origins is a dark heroic fantasy set in a unique world. As the spiritual successor of BioWare's popular Baldur's Gate series of games, it uses a pause-and-play tactical combat system. Play in over-the-shoulder mode, or the more tactical top-down view. Dragon Age: Origins features a stunning amount of cinematic dialog. Players will be able to acquire unique party members. Description:
Assassin's Creed II is an action-adventure video game, continuing the story of Desmond Miles [voiced by Nolan North] and the "Animus", a machine which makes it possible for the player to view the genetic memories of his ancestors, a long line of assassins. In Assassin's Creed II, the machine is used to view the memories of a young nobleman-turned-assassin named Ezio Auditore da Firenze in the late 15th and early 16th century in Italy, during the Renaissance.

Assassin's Creed II takes place in an open world with nonlinear gameplay, allowing the player to roam freely within several regions throughout late 15th century Italy, such as Venice, Florence, and the Tuscan countryside. The missions in the game now have an expanded variety, with different structuring. For example, a mission may have the objective to escort someone, but may change to a chase and assassination. Investigation is less explicit, and instead missions may follow people and/or a narrative. There are roughly 200 missions in this game; about half are part of the main storyline.

    Name: Red Faction: Guerrilla
    Developer: THQ
    Availability: Multiplatform
    Genre: Action/Adventure
    Description:
In Red Faction: Guerrilla, the player takes the role of a Alec Mason as he assists the Red Faction to disrupt and overthrow the Earth Defense Force (EDF) on Mars. This is presented to the player in a third person perspective, a departure from the series' previous two games which were first person shooters. Developer Volition changed the camera perspective to help the player see and appreciate the surroundings as they are destroyed.[4] Much of the game centers around the game's Geomod 2.0 engine, which allows for buildings, cover, and other structures to be dynamically destroyed. In many cases, destroying buildings will leave behind salvage, the game's form of currency, which can be used along with salvage rewarded by completing missions to unlock and upgrade weaponry and technology. During the campaign, the player is equipped with a sledgehammer-like weapon, along with up to 3 other weapons or explosive devices. The player also has the opportunity to control armed vehicles such as tanks and walkers for more destructive options.
The game plays in an open world representing a terraformed area of Mars' surface. The world is divided into six distinct areas, and the player must successfully free each area from EDF control before moving onto the next. Should the player wander into as-yet-unfreed areas, they will be attacked by EDF forces. The player can traverse on foot or by hijacking one of the numerous vehicles that travel its surface. Navigation is provided by a mini-map and a GPS indicator which directs the player. In order to liberate an given area the player must complete a variety of missions to reduce the EDF's presence. At the same time, the player can complete various side missions, such as rescuing hostages, and delivering vehicles. Players may also be rewarded with salvage for completing these tasks. Other actions, such as letting civilians die, will lower morale, while actively killing civilians will lower morale faster. Should the player engage EDF forces in an area with high morale, civilians will likely join the fight alongside the player. Once the player has worn down the EDF presence in a sector to zero, a final mission will be available allowing the player to completely secure the sector. Once this has been completed for a sector it will be freely traversable, with no danger of EDF conflict (with some exceptions).).

    Multiplayer:
Red Faction: Guerrilla's multiplayer mode uses similar role-playing elements as introduced in Battlefield 2. As the player engages in more matches, they gain experience points that will grant them bonuses; most of which take the form of superficial bonuses such as the option to add more features to character models or altering aspects of their player emblem, and have no impact on the game. Other bonuses grant players access to additional gameplay modes.
The multiplayer modes also use Geomod 2.0 and the same weapons available in the game. An added feature exclusive to the multiplayer mode however, are special backpacks that grant players a unique, temporary power. Such powers include the ability to run faster, fly, burst through walls, or send out a concussion wave. Another additional device in the multiplayer games is the Reconstructor, a weapon-like object that uses nano-technology to rebuild destroyed structures. It is a key device in game modes which require players to attack or defend specific structures. There are six game modes, including typical multiplayer modes such as individual and team deathmatch and Capture the flag. Other modes focus on attempting to destroy or preventing the destruction of structures. "Siege" for example requires one team to try to destroy buildings controlled by the other as fast as possible. After a set period of time, or once all targets are destroyed, the roles are reversed, and a new round begins. The team that manages to destroy all targets the fastest wins the round.
Along with online multiplayer, there is an offline only "pass the controller" multiplayer game mode for two to four players called "Wrecking Crew". Wrecking Crew features several different modes, all of which are based around causing as much damage by oneself in each round with a set amount of resources (such as ammo, time, or both).

    heavy-rain.jpg

    Description:
When you're saying anything at all about Heavy Rain, the first thing you need to say is that it's bold. Quantic Dream has set out to produce an interactive noir thriller that's truly cinematic in scope with masses of tension, very human (and flawed) characters and multiple branching pathways for players to wind their way along. So, a quick plot rundown – a difficult job without giving away spoilers but, here we go: in Heavy Rain the basic aim is to save someone from death and to catch the person who put the victim in the position whereby they could die. Oh, and the perpetrator happens to be a serial killer. He or she is "The Origami Killer". You achieve these tasks by conversing (if you're not a fan of the Mass Effects or Monkey Islands of the gaming world, you may want to stop reading now) and by completing "quicktime events". Unlike most games, you control five characters: a father, a female journalist, a male FBI profiler, a male private eye and one further character. You do this in different parts of the game, not simultaneously. With the control system, it must be said that Quantic Dream has produced an imaginative and pleasant-to-use method of getting the most from the PS3 controller. It has also got to be said that Heavy Rain is probably the first game where a developer has had the gumption to make the motion capabilities of the PS3 controller properly useful. As well as certain basic movements for getting about the game, you'll use the Sixaxis at certain moments to follow on-screen prompts that can be deceptively tricky. Getting them wrong can mean anything from failing to sit down to sudden death. Death in Heavy Rain is unlike that which you see in other games. There is no miraculous resurrection - once a character is dead the game continues without them, adjusting the plot to accommodate their untimely departure. You can actually allow all the playable characters to die and still see the ending of the game, such is the branching nature of the story. Heavy Rain could well draw you deeper into a game than you've ever gone before.

    Genre: Action Adventure
    Description:
    god_of_war_3_impressions.jpg

There are a number of game franchises that can be described as “console-sellers”; exclusive games that can help make the decision between one platform and another. The importance of these games has diminished somewhat in recent years, with fewer exclusives, and online 'friends' being a bigger deciding factor. However, every once in a while, an exclusive title comes along that causes gamers who chose the other system to despair. The most recent example was Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360. The PS3 has its latest in the form of God of War III.

Unlike the previously mentioned Mass Effect 2, GOWIII has kept close to its roots. The gameplay has only minor tweaks, most of the main characters have made appearances already in the series and the plot follows a structure reminiscent of its predecessors. The story picks up where the second game left off with
Kratos attacking Mount Olympus, hell-bent on killing all gods that cross him, with the behemoth Titans in tow
. Like its predecessors, GOWIII starts as it means to continue; one giant set-piece after another. The pace of the game is measured, with few “lulls”, and each encounter on your journey is memorably epic.

The most striking aspect of GOWIII is the visuals. I am not just talking about graphical prowess, but size. There are moments in the game where you will gasp at the sheer epic size of the environments you traverse, the enemies you fight and the allies you fight with. Throughout, the game engine performs like a Ferrari, making it all look so easy, never showing the cracks.

If there is one flaw, one miniscule chink in the armour, it is the aforementioned predecessors. We have seen a lot of these things before; we have seen what happens when you hammer the circle button while on the back of a Cyclops; we have seen the unfortunate demise of a Gorgon. While the phrase, “If it ain’t broke…” comes to mind, one has a niggling feeling that Sony Santa Monica have avoided risking any major changes, which is both commendable and disappointing. However, this is nit-picking. GOWIII is one of the most exciting games on the PS3, a thrill-ride of truly epic proportions and a certified “console-seller”

    Description:
Gameplay in Bad Company 2 resembles that of the original and is set in various environments from South America and the mountainous regions along the borders of Russia. Like its predecessor, Bad Company 2 features destructible environments. The system is dubbed "Destruction 2.0," and the level of destruction is extended—players can now completely collapse a building as opposed to only blowing out walls. The video game also introduces bullet drop, a gravitational effect that causes shots from most weapons to drop over long distances.

Bad Company 2 features 15 vehicles, including new additions, such as the UH-60 Black Hawk, a quad bike, a two-man patrol boat, a personal watercraft, a ZU-23 mounted on a BTR-D armored personnel carrier, and a UAV helicopter controlled via remote computer terminals. Players can now hold up to three rifles, along with grenades.

Multiplayer however is where the fun begins. With four choices on how to play the game (Assault, Medic, Engineer, Recon) the player is sent into a 12 vs 12 battle in Rush (attack or defend stations) or Conquest (capture the flag). Other game modes include Squad Deathmatch where four squads of four players try to be the first to reach 50 kills to win and Squad Rush where a squad of four tries to attack or defend against another squad of four. Where this game is different from others is the use of vehicles. The players can take hold of tanks, helicopters, quad bikes, jet-skis and light armour vehicles to help them achieve the objective.

    bayonetta_boots.jpg

Bayonetta is a witch. Her suit is made of hair for some not immediately apparent reason. She uses it as a weapon too. Nothing in Bayonetta really makes much sense, but it's brilliant so it doesn't really matter.

With the emphasis on 'over the top' in 'over the top action', Bayonetta is the natural progression of the action genre. The spiritual successor to the Devil May Cry series, this game takes the foundation and gameplay mechanics set down by DMC, God of War and others and turns it right up to 11, but figures 11 isn't enough, then turns it up to like 100. Letting you play the kick-ass parts other games show you in cut-scenes, Bayonetta ramps up the scale and silliness of the genre. While the combat system may initially seem like button-bashing, it soon reveals itself to be much more than that, with a depth extremely unusual for 3rd person beat 'em ups. Game changing weapons, split second dodges, wicked weaves, witch time, remixed enemy types, crazy combos, juggling - the game is constantly throwing surprises at the player. Harder modes illustrate the game at it's purest (and I'd strongly recommend heading straight onto hard mode once you've bested normal), but there's an automatic mode for beginners which lets you witness the sheer madness of the game without having to learn endless combos.

Add in truly epic boss battles, a suitably cheesy J-Pop soundtrack, and more videogame homages than you can keep up with (Hang On! Viewtiful Joe! After Burner!), Bayonetta is the game God of War wants to be, but isn't quite silly enough to be.

    Genre: FPS / Action Adventure
    Review:
    picture.php?albumid=1458&pictureid=7890

Treyarch have long been the underdogs of the Call of Duty family. They received undue animosity from COD fans around the world when Activision hired them to create games for the series. They were admonished for even daring to 'compete' with Infinity Ward, the original developers. They were shouted down over their valiant but ultimately average first attempt at a new-gen entry in the series [Call of Duty 3]. In the end, it was tough being Treyarch.

When they got the opportunity to prove themselves, they released World at War, 'another WWII shooter'. However, this was the only glib criticism that could be flung at it. Using a tweaked version of the Modern Warfare engine, they created a worthy entry in the franchise, giving us a solid single-player experience with a decent story, an exciting co-op mode in the form of fighting Nazi zombies and a multiplayer mode that rivalled the mighty MW.

However, Infinity Ward were still the fan favourites, so Treyarch still needed to prove themselves... and they have done so, with Black Ops. Again, we get a single-player mode; not to be sniffed at; written by David S. Goyer no less [Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, the new Superman reboot], with Sam Worthington and Gary Oldman as voice talent. We get a revamped zombie mode, with new maps and a twin-stick shooter mode called Dead Ops.

The selling point, however, is the multiplayer. There are no more nukes and no more 12+ kill streak rewards, which almost eliminates the problems MW2 had with 'glitchers' and 'boosters'. We now have a new currency system, where skills and teamwork are rewarded with money. This simple change allows for many more, including; Wager matches where betting increases the rewards and risks; the buying of weapon attachments from the moment the weapon is unlocked; weapon personalisations like camo, logos and clan tags. Each of these small but long sought-after changes add up to deliver a MP mode that surpasses that of Infinity Ward's effort.

Ther are problems, of course. Wager matches tend to become a haven for campers, the RCXD [exploding radio-controlled toy car] is earned far too early and the single-player, while enjoyable, is again, criminally short.

While not perfect, Treyarch have proven themselves with Black Ops.

    9 / 10

Description:You play as faith, she is a runner & lives in a city were big brother is used to keep the cities population safe, but as we all no that has a flip side(that been..kept under control).
Information is hard to move around,so if you want to move a piece of info, well your gonna need a runner & this were the game really shows its worth. The Levels are bright & built very well for the tasks at hand, let me just say that this is not a shooter(even if you can pick up weapons)it is a free running game & when you stick to the freerunning aspect you will be rewarded.Your not unarmed buy anymeans, you have two hands & they are quite handy(pun)indeed, you have a bullet time like moment at your disposal for disarming people with ease(its a little tricker without it).
The cutscenes are done in a kind of cell shaped graphic, different from the Unreal engine used to power the game itself, but lend nicely to the feel of the game. And lastly there are time trials to play with once youve done with the main game(All do the Ps3 conrols can seem clunky here more than ingame)but allround this game is very good & worth a purchase.:cool:mirrorsone.jpg

    Name: Dark Souls
    Developer: From Software
    Genre: Fantasy Action RPG
    Description:
The game focuses on dungeon crawling and the tension and fear that arise when players encounter enemies in this setting. The game is a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls (which in turn is considered a spiritual successor to the King's Field games). Dark Souls takes place in an open world environment. Dark Souls allows players to light Bonfires, which function as respawn locations.[6] These bonfires also replenish health, magic, and special items like Estus flasks - limited vials that restore health.[7] The player battles using various weapons and strategies to survive in a dark fantasy world. Online features allow players to share the play experience without need for direct communication.

There are more weapons, spells, and new classes. It is also said to be 'significantly harder', with more enemies and more difficult encounters. It includes leaving messages to other players, seeing others' deaths, and player versus player (as well as a new co-op system).[8][9][10]
