Jazz in general is a fairly complex music to play on any instrument, so it's natural that you will find the going tough at the start, until you get a feel for it.

If you're REALLY serious about learning you can check out Newpark Music Centre in Blackrock. They have a 4 year degree in Jazz Performance. You will get individual lessons along with a good education. But if you just want to do it in your own time then maybe you could try to get lessons with a jazz musician. Obviously there aren't many jazz violin teachers around but I could recommend one or two teachers myself. They're not violinists but they really could teach you a lot or at least they could refer you to a suitable teacher.

The best way to learn to play jazz though is to learn some jazz melodies and transcribe some solos. As a violinist you'd struggle to find a lot of material on your instrument but you could always work with material written for a trumpet or an alto sax. If you do decide to do that I'd recommend studying Miles Davis, Lester Young or Charlie Parker to start you off.

    Best of luck
