Think that could be true alright. One of our lecturers actually asked us if anyone had gotten in this year due to changes in the foreign language requirement.

The third language requirement is not a UCC requirement, it's an NUI requirement. UL is non-NUI so it does not apply there.

    More information at: http://www.nui.ie/college/entry-requirements.asp

Dropping the third language for Irish applicants is often discussed but has not been enacted. Arguments in favour of its retention include the risk to the national language, if the NUI requirements were dropped from three to two languages many possible applicants might drop Irish in favour of an alternate. This issue is not likely to be resolved soon.

Somebody likes to demonstrate their love of the English language by correcting others use while they are TYPING. What ever floats your boat I guess.

I think it's very unlikely Irish will be dropped, that will most likely be left to simmer the way it is at the moment, until some new visionary devises a plan to inject life back into it.

Dropping the other languages could be useful tough, it would give people in their leaving cert more time to focus on subjects i.e. biology which may be relevant to their future career choice as opposed to lets say someone doing Ag. Science when they want to be a physics graduate.

TBH I'd be extremly happy to drop my 3rd language and keep on Irish, despite the fact I dread doing it.

Neh well it seems this rumour has been squashed:(

If that was deliberate it would have been amazing :D can't see it coming in anytime soon. As was said it's a NUI thing not a UCC thing. Plus all the plebs would get in then :p
