I got my mother, stuck for things to do (her birds have flown nest, etc.) a registration in facebook.

I did that some months ago ... and nothing seems to be happening. I put some photos up and we imported her few emails .. and, well, it's like watching paint dry quite frankly.

On top of it all, it takes quite a while to load (slower than yahoo, etc.) so it's quite a bore.

But then, there's all the news about it ... it seems to be so popular.

What is the big deal about it? Is anybody getting efficient use out of it?

    Has she any/many FB friends?

    i think she about 3 or 4.

she also keeps seeing the "friends of friends" coming up. Is the idea she should also contact those, and so start building a network?

And whatś the main social vehicle in facebook? online chat? photo-sharing? What's the usual excuse to start interacting?

FB is great for keeping touch with relatives, friends and other foes. The main purpose for most is to share some photos, but keep it within reason. No point in uploading 100s of pictures, as it will take time to load.

I would also recommend checking the security settings for her profile, to ensure that she only shares with friends.
    - click on the settings menu and select privacy settings

Other than that, FB can be boring and slow, especially if you have very few friends. You only get updates in FB, if some of your friends post new stuff or you are a "fan" of certain FB sites.

The question is, how much does she use and will she use it. If her friends use FB, and the kids, then it should be getting better every time.
