Is there anybody else really p1ssed off about the amount of people on facebook on the computers in the library? The library computers are for doing serious work. If you want to go on facebook, f**k off over to the arts millenium building or aras ui cathaill. I was left standing there for 20 minutes waiting for a computer. Surely they can block these websites so the serious students can do some work:mad:

WoW your work must have been really serious :pac:

Are you saying you yourself never go off onto another site that's not related to serious work for a break of two?:P cause i find that hard to believe.

If you just approached someone clearly doing nothing,I'm sure they'd be more than happy to hop off if you asked nicely.

Next time you're on,print out in big bold writing "RESERVED" on a white page, and stamp it to a PC, it's your PC for ever now :D

Nah I know what you mean. I usually have my laptop with me, but I got kind of annoyed the other day just seeing people messing about with .. Farmville or whatever it was, while people stood in a queue a few meters away. It's one thing in a pc suite that isn't full, but just wasting other people's time is pretty bad form.

I wouldn't say you'd be out of line to go up to someone who is clearly doing nothing and ask if they are finished.. I don't think there's much point blocking any sites like that anyway, there are easy ways of getting around it.

They used to have it blocked, well Bebo anyways, but they seemed to have lifted the ban after they felt that everyone had learnt their leason... obviously not. i think it's cool to have it open alright when u are using the computers for study, it was a life saver during exam time for me. You could just ask did anyone have certain notes etc, and cos it was exam time everyone was online. But going on and just using the apps and not using the computer for anything else is pushing it a bit.

    Its fairly annoying alright.
Unfortunately the only way around the problem in my opinion is to buy a laptop!
The college will never be able to fully block websites like that as there is an endless supply of proxy sites out there people can use and also proxy software too.

The wireless on campus is awesome tbh so I'd say just plug in at one of the usual study desks with your laptop rather than wait for a desktop

There is nothing more frustrating than waiting for a computer to do work when there is idiots wasting time online!

I'd say email computer services. I'd say they're not far off blocking facebook now, a few emails might tip the balance. There used to be the same problem with bebo in its hay day. I actually lost marks because I couldn't print out one of my important assignments in time - I thought an hour would be enough to get computer access.

Their peak-time ban of bebo was a good idea. Or if they could even have a system when the ban is only in place when there's no free computers in the PC suite.

Not everyone can afford a laptop. I think comp services should do an occasional walk-though in computer labs and note the proxy sites being used.

There are loads of computers over in the Cairnes building, way more than the library. It's an extra 5 mins but hey, it's worth it. I've been there 3 or 4 times and there's always at least 10 PCs free :)

It only takes you 300 seconds to walk from the library door to Friars?

Actually for the average Joe Soap, with an average walking pace of 5.6km/hr , it should take about 437seconds , or 7.28 minutes to travel the 0.68km door to door.

Ah an additional 2.28 minutes wont kill'em.

That's fascinating, almost 50% more time than the poster claimed!
If you factor in the current works in the area of the route and potential pedestrian jams, I do ponder on how long the journey would take..

Wind resistance could also make a difference.

Have a look here: http://www.nuigalway.ie/cs/students/wireless/wireless_printing.html. Just need to install the wireless printing utility. Big time saver. Then just collect from a release station.

Students are advised that a temporary prohibition on access to Facebook will be implemented within the PC Suites during peak hours (10:00 to 18:00), Monday to Friday to run from Thursday November 26th 2009 to Friday December 18th 2009 inclusive. This restriction is being made following requests made to ISS by Class Reps and the Students Union, who believe that this restriction is necessary to ensure that University PCs are more readily available for use by students undertaking core academic activities.

This restriction on Facebook is not being applied on the University wireless networks.

Students are reminded that the use of PC Suites for academic activities (assignments/exam preparation) should always take precedence over the use of those same resources for social or leisure activities.

We trust that students will understand the rationale for this restriction and co-operate with its implementation. If you have any comments or concerns please contact us by email to the ISS Service Desk - servicedesk@nuigalway.ie
