    Hi,

    General question,

If one wanted to purchase products from Chinese manufactures. Merchandise to stock a retail fashion store. Jewellery-clothing-shoes etc.

    Where would someone start?
the Internet is a maze, I wouldn't dream of choosing and buying straight from on line pictures.
I would like to take a trip, but where do you go to find out the factories who make the goods.

Would attending trade fairs be a good Idea? would trade fairs in China cater for English speaking customers?

    Many questions!!!!

Thanks a mill for help x

Be very careful with importing clothes from china in terms of goods been counterfit etc.
Alibaba and tradekey are good sites to meet suppliers but do your homework on the supplier.
Tradeshows are great to go to and meet the supplier and discuss terms etc, most tradeshows have interpreters available but you will be supreised at the amount of suppliers who speak English

    Hi Madonna,

I'm not in fashion myself, but took a trip to China Trade Fair (Electrical) last October and visited some of the 'fashion cities' in Duangong / Guangzhou while I was there. (Not sure if thats the correct spelling)

Nearly every person I met spoke basic english, and was quite easy to negotiate with. That granted, I was only looking for clothes for myself, but everything was unbelieveably cheap.

Basic "River Island / TopMan" style T-Shirts / Tops were easily available around $.50 - but they had everything from Suits (bought 2 for 20 each) to hats and shoes...

If I was going down the fashion retail route, I'd definately take a trip over just to see what's available, it's an eye opening experience. Plus, it wasnt that expensive to get there.

    Just my .02cent :D

No Problem - if you need more info I have a friend over there who I can ask to look into

He brought us right off the beaten track so maybe thats why we got stuff so cheap (My mate was with me and has red hair, everywhere we went people were taking pictures of him with their cameraphones, he got slightly paranoid:D ) - I can find out particular address if you need.

Best of luck with it anyway!!

    I am Chinese myself,
If you have a very big order, definitely it's worth attending those trade fairs by yourself, there are new products invented everyday in China, and you will be treated as a VIP because there are more suppliers and less buyers there.
Language gap is not a problem at all, becase every chinese has e-dictionary if you can spell it out. :D
The best places to visit are Canton City (guang zhou), and Wen Zhou.
You can trust most of the seller on the internet (eg. Alibaba.com) , but nobody can guarantee 100%.
If you need any help, you can contact a friend of mine in China, leo_liulf@hotmail.com , he was in Dublin before, and went back to China and openned his own company.
Let me know if you need any other help :)

If you yourself are a retailer with 1 or 2 shops, then you're very unlikely to be able to order the volumes necessary to buy directly from Chinese manufacturers - unless you're shifting serious volumes of each item. For example, for clothing and jewellery, the most basic manufacturing run would typically be 10 dozen of a single item in a single colour. Assuming you stock an item in more than 1 colour, you'd be looking at minimum quantities of 30-40 dozen in each size.

Are you big enough to buy from China, Why not go to Fashion city, they companies there buy huge quantities from china and abroad so prices will be much better.

Where is your shop i know someone that can supply you jewelery for your shop if you are interested?

Is or has anyone used Alibaba / Made in China etc to purchase products??

I am wondering if anyone has used a trader from there if the can report back and say whether they are safe to deal with or to stay away from.

Hopefully we can build up a list of good traders and maybe also one's to stay away from..

I've started a thread on it here.. http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055733480

If your serious then you should really go to China. They are used to foreigners coming over at this stage and whilst the english is not great you can get by.

Guandong is the place to go for fashion.

Alibaba etc is full of rip off merchants. Caveat Emptor

I am with you totally on this if I was looking or resalable stock but what I am personally looking for is to buy a Bulk of 1 or 2 products to use within my business so I would not be buying repeatedly just the odd large order.
So I was thinking a list of reliable sellers would be handy for me and others in my position also.
