Starting playing Warhammer

Hi, I'm new to boards and I just noticed this forum. I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

A few years ago I collected Chaos Space Marines in Warhammer 40,000. I recently returned to the hobby and found they didn't really suit my style. I found them not very fun to paint especially.

I'd like to start fresh with a new army, and I need some advice. Should I collect another Warhammer 40,000 army, or should I start collecting Fantasy or Lord Of The Rings instead? I'm interested in all three games but I don't know which army to collect in any of them, and I don't want to go pouring lots of more money into an army that I won't enjoy using.

I also need some help on what I should buy to start whatever army I decide on in the end.

I'd like an army that aren't too difficult to paint and play, but are still fun to use, collect and paint. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

What is your preferred play style?

    Yo man.

I'm also returning to the hobby.
    I am sticking with 40k.

Personally I think you should do the same if you really enjoyed it before :)

Yeah ask yourself, do you want a combat army ? or a pew pew army? maybe heavy tanks? a mix ?
Maybe lore of an army or race appeals to you.

    what style suits you ?
Is there an army that you always liked but never really had time or money to collect?

    haha so many questions.
Give us some feedback and we will try help buddy.

    Thanks for the responses!

I'd like to collect a versatile army that won't be too difficult to play for someone returning to the hobby like me. I'd also prefer to play a good rather than an evil army.

Also, I'd like something that isn't too challenging to paint as I'm only just returning to the hobby, but I'd like something that is quite fun also, with plenty of learning opportunities.

I dunno if that makes any sense, but thanks anyway if you can help. :o

Ahh cool cool, well I guess armies that fit into "good" would be Space marines, Imperial Guard, Witch Hunters, Demonhunters, Tau and Eldar.

You disliked your chaos, so maybe avoid the good guy version.
I would say go with the Xenos!

    Tau or Eldar

Awesome armies, easy to paint and can be hard to master.
    Extremely fun to play.

Thanks man, I'll check out Tau and Eldar next time I'm in Games Workshop.

Can anyone suggest anything for Fantasy or Lord Of The Rings if I was to go with one of them instead?

    Drop Tau off that list.
They are a nice army to paint, I've got several thousand points so I do know what I'm talking about.
The thing is they are a very difficult army to play with and win with in 5th edition. It can be done but it's not going to be a wonderful experience for a returning player if they get stomped a lot.

Eldar on the other hand are an army with a lot of tricks a number of competitive builds and will offer a bit of variety to someone using them.

Orks could be considered a Good army. They see themselves as good anyway ;). A great army to collect and paint with options from small and elite to horde.

IG are well worth a look. With their new codex you can play a tank and valkiere heavy army and have a lot of fun blowing stuff up.

Okay, I'll check out Imperial Guard & Orks too. I've heard though that Eldar are quite difficult to paint. Are they good for a beginner painter like me?

Also, if anyone has any tips at all about what I should go for if I wanted to play Fantasy or LOTR, I'd really appreciate it!

If you're a beginner painter try and get into gamesworkshop or gamers world in Dublin or Realms in cork for a quick 1-1 tutorial.
Having someone sit down and show you the basics will really help get you going.
I've painted a lot of different figures and the only thing eldar might have as an extra on painting is all the gems. There are lots of tutorials online for doing gems and you can always just paint 'em a single colour and splash some gloss varnish on there.

FB armies are a tough one.
I can tell you to avoid empire. Wayyy too much painting to get an army going.

I believe the top tournament armies are Dark elves and Vamp counts but I could be wrong

I'm in much the same position, just returning to the hobby, used to play Chaos etc. I was planning on staying with Chaos but apparently they really messed with the codex. Grrr.
I wouldnt recommend Vamps as a beginner army in WHFB, maybe it was just me but I started with them and really struggled. Couldn't get my head around the whole fragile thing.
