Apparently there's a cards society that didn't have a stand at Freshers' Week, and they do poker once a week. Can't remember where they are, that's just what a friend told me last week.

In the Olden Days, Card Soc was huge. Clearly it's become less well organised since then. But they are the people you want.

Ever since they weren't allowed use the buttery anymore, the cardsoc was always on its last legs. In first year it would easily get over 60 players, last year it did well to get 15.

As far as I know, its not running this year, but if someone wants to take it over and try and get it running again drop me a PM and I can put you in touch with the guy that is still theoretically in charge.

I'm not in Trinity anymore but I cut my poker teeth playing in the Monday night game, as did many of my friends who have gone on to make good money from the game, and I would hate to see it go under.

The DUMSS society will be running poker tournaments once a month. Our first one is next tuesday 13th in Mac Turcaills. You will see posters up around college about it tomorrow.

You can join on the night and then play. Because of high demand, we are probably going to have to limit it to the first 80 people to turn up at registration.

I asked Eoin if he'd be up for taking over the cardsoc and he said yeah. We should do it

I tried to join cardsoc during freshers week and was told they would get a slap on the wrist for failing to recruit. I give my +1 to any card/poker society revival.

Have you spoken to CSC about your intent to carry on the activities of a different society?

We are not taking over the activities of a different society, it is a social occasion where our members get the chance to mingle. And its not very regular either, 4/5 events during the college calendar isn't "taking over activities". If it is an issue I will of course go to the CSC about it..but I dont see what the problem is.

A regular poker night would be dodgy, especially if your society is spending any money on it, because your society's money is for its aims rather than a different society's aims.

What are the aims of DUMSS if not entertainment and socialising for their members? And if those aims are best achieved through a poker night (which isn't beyond the realms of possibility, given the nature of MSISS) what's wrong with spending society money on it? Besides, don't all receipts have to go through CSC anyway? It's not like they hand over a bag of cash and say "Now, don't spend any of that money on the aims of a different society!"

I dont want to get bogged down on this issue...the CSC will not be paying for any of this. It is a simple socialising event, no big deal. Its just one of numerous events we have planned, and obviously the majority of them are based around the aims of our society.

The CSC will not fund an event which is not within the aims of the society...every society has events like these...

Doesn't say anything about whose (un)invited on the posters, and don't think they'd mind other people coming in anyways.

If anyone is interested in taking over Cardsoc this year, you should probably pop into CSC to discuss it with Lucy. Or drop me (Rob) a mail on chair@csc.tcd.ie. The society has had its problems and it would be a good idea to get it restarted in a proper way rather than just being passed on in an ad hoc manner.

  • Pokers awesome. If only i had money to gamble away...

MSISS is highly stats/probability/math driven. These are of course attributes it shares with a certain card game :pac:

DUMSS features many social events mixed in with guest speakers/events with a focus on a Management Science. Plus the prizes are funded by entry fees/buy backs. MacTurcaills provide food and drinks promos in exchange for customers. Where is there any CSC money being spent here?

DUMSS had a very successful poker night on tuesday. We had 70 people turnout, with some great deals on drinks in Mac Turcaills. It's open to anyone.
