We're looking at getting a small run about that will do about 10 miles per year.

Rather than going the whole hog and going for a 30+ classic I was thinking of getting an R5 gt turbo. (Raider if possible ).
As its only a 1.4 - tax at least should be not too horrific !

Having had one back in the day and loving it, I was wondering what the folks here thought ?

Good choice!!! R5s are fantastic cars... Turbo ones are hard to come by though and often driven into the ground by boy racers. Most of them have been modified in some way...

Maybe you should consider a standard 1.4 version, the 1996. Still a few of them about and cheap to buy. I have one and i LOVE it!

thanks - It's got to be a GT Turbo as imo its the one which will be most sought after in years to come and is already a modern classic.

As for the ones posted - I have already had my eye on the Red one - but would rather the Raider model if possible.

Yea, I know alot of them have been modded alot but I am hoping for a miracle !

Cracking car - used to have one back in the day.

Drove one for a month in France this summer - really loved it - no PS which was a shock when parking.

That red one is a beaut - love the wheels.

10 miles a year is very low - are you really lazy and live really close to work?

Great choice with the R5T. I would agree totally with 2CV in that they are very hard to find. Most have been heavily modified and are now in a different category of vehicle.
With much patience it is possible to find genuine models in the Uk. Be warned they come at a price. Mild modifications that align to the overall vehicle look & feel are ok. Take notice of vehicles with Devil (pronounced deveel). These can be invisible but really cool!
Some points to remember when buying a 5T
Later models (mid 90's) have the most factory modifications fitted as standard. Models previous to this can cause a little frustration. especially with the fuel system - boiling petrol, pinking, etc.

Keep in mind these problems (which are fixable).
Clutch cable snaps (routing issue & modified cabble required).
Intake manifold cooler relay & rheostat failure.
Turbo failure (mostly due to incorrect spec of engine oil & driving habits).
    Boost pressure regulator value.
Brake master cylinder (only issue on RHD models because of location ofservo next to ex manifold).
    Brake pad growl.
    Handbrake ratchet sticking.
    Electric / electronic speedo failure.
Door hinge pin wear - noise!
    Window regulator
    L/H inner drive shaft gaitor.
Increased body roll with age - due to weak anti-roll bar.
Also watch for models that drive really hard on the front. Believe it or not I have worked on many %T that still had the factory spring savers installed (nylon) at the top of the strut. They should have been removed at the time when the car was to be sold to the customer. They prevent spring rebound travel and is not nice to drive.

    Hope this helps.

Helps ! Its my new bible thanks.

I had a phase 2 which I think had sorted the issue with the boiling petrol and poor warm starts by adding a fan on the carb and longer life turbo thanks to water cooling if memory serves me correctly.

I saw an 86 phase one for sale on ebay for 4k sterling recently - it looked like a show winner from the pics with one owner and only about 5ok miles - thats a bit too rich for me and I would rather the phase 2 to be honest, and we'll not be able to keep a show winner with the young lad about !

    thanks for the info

Cracking car, if buying from england watch out as the vrt is massive on these.
A mate of mine soon found this out when he brought it in, around €1300!
