Take a look on amazon and search for shooting. You can read read reviews of any books that take your fancy.

For a history of the rifle, the American rifle in particular, you won't do better than "American Rifle: A Biography" by Alexander Rose. Gives an in dept look at rifle and ammunition development starting with the introduction of the rifle to America by German settlers in the early 18th century.

For rifle maintenance, "Accurizing the Factory Rifle" by M. L. McPherson will explain how all the various parts of a rifle work and how to improve and maintain them.

For technique and equipment, "The Rifle Shooter" by David Tubb is a great read and introduction to rifle shooting, from there you can branch in to something more specific to your interest.
