DTT from Mount Leinster - What channels should I be receiving?

I'm fairly new to DTT but I hope that someone can answer some of my questions to help me along. With all the recent posts about DTT tests etc. I thought that I would have a go and see what the signal and picture quality was like.

The equipment I am using is as follows:

    Type B/K (Yellow Tip) Antenna
Hitachi Freeview STB Model No. HDB71

When I did a scan all that I am reciving is
    Ch. 800 2FM
    Ch. 801 Lyric
    Ch. 802 RTE 1
    Ch. 803 RTE 2
    Ch. 804 Radio 1
    Ch. 805 RNAG
    Ch. 806 TG4
    Ch. 807 TV3

All these channels are coming in on P1 - UHF 45 and the signal level is very good. The radio channels are working fine but I have nothing on the Tv channels. Also, the teletext seems to be working fine. I can't receive anything on the UHF 39, 42 and 49.

Can anyone help educate a newbie please........:)

In digital broadcasts you get multiple channels on a single frequency opposed to analogue where you get one channel per frequency.

Channel 45 (666000Khz) is the free to air Mux on Mt. Leinster and the channels you are picking are the only digital channels being broadcast at the moment.

The reason you cannot view the TV channels is because Irish DTT uses MPEG4 compression, where UK Freeview uses MPEG2 compression.

I'd assume your receiver is only MPEG2 capable.

You can hear the radio channels because they use MPEG audio compression which your receiver is able to decode.

Is this box MPEG4 compatible or just MPEG2?

If you receive audio but no video it is more than likely just MPEG2 compatible.

MPEG2 is the UK Freeview spec whereas the Irish DTT will be using MPEG4.

Thanks Bob and Pizzahead for the info. I originally thought that the Irish DTT tests were being broadcast in MPEG2 only.

Would I be correct in saying that the only way that I can receive the available video channels is by using a TV that is MPEG4 compatible? Are there any STB's available that are MPEG4 compatible?

Thanks once again for your help.

If you happen to have an unused sat dish on your house, or you are feed up of paying Sky, a HD combo box (satellite + terrestrial) is not that much more expensive than a standalone DTT box. The Mvision HD Combo being a great buy at 200e.

Remember Irish DTT is still in test mode and could disappear at any time. Also when it is officially released, and if there is a commercial element to it, there will be boxes available far cheaper than they are now, or at least they should be.

    Thanks again Bob,

Is an Open Media box the same as the unit that you mentioned? What is available on these boxes as I live out of town and only have access to MMDS and satellite. Is there any way to receive the Engish Premiership games?
