Hello there, I have a few ideas in my head for a few Iphone apps that either don't exist or can be done alot better.
Was thinking about learning how to be an App developer but can't really learn because I am in final year of University.
I was wondering how you go about it.
Do you approach a developer and give him a percentage of the idea?
    Or employ a developer?
Or sell the idea onto someone?

Bearing in mind I have little/no money to put into it.

    Any replies would be good
    Cheers

P.S. If there are any people who have Iphone Apps on here it would be good to hear your thoughts etc on the whole area

You can't sell an idea, so that's out.

You could pay a developer to develop it, either directly, or by giving him a percentage if he'll take that, which is unlikely.

If you're studying something computer related how about doing it as your final year project?

I can't imagine it would be that difficult to learn, you can sign up to apple's developer page and it gives tutorials and samples and stuff.

Also are you doing it to make money from it? If not then could you make it a web app? That's just javascript and web stuff afaik. If you have a mac there's even a wysiwyg iphone web app developer thing that comes with xcode.

I got a quote for one before between $1500 and $7500, that was just one company in america so wouldn't know if thats the norm, but at that rate I doubt the app itself would be a money spinner.

I went and used the xcode thing after that and it was pretty easy to use, it looked pretty but didnt do anything, then i got bored and left it...

You could try and collaborate with a developer and they might take a percentage... or something along those lines. Maybe check out www.collab.ie

I develop iPhone apps in my spare time come from a background in software engineering. Really I picked up objective-C as I went along and there are a lot of online resources and sample code available if you poke around.

In the past I've had people talk to me about developing their ideas, but to be honest it's not really worth it if they offer you a percentage of the sales revenue. Unless you hit on a real niche or a great popular idea you're never going to recoup the cost of the development time in the short or even medium term. The biggest problem I've come across is getting people to find out about your application.

With the revenue share idea as a developer I'd effectively be taking on the risk of someone's idea and sinking my development time into it in the hope of a payoff later on - especially if you're talking about a development time in the months rather than weeks. I'd much rather be paid up front for my time as I have to make a living too. Currently I have more ideas than I can put down in code.

You may want to talk to http://www.area52.ie/ (I spoke to them a while back) who seem to develop from ideas or post on the Apple Media Devices forum for some more developer feedback. There are a few of us iPhone developers who post there.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you want any specifics.
