Fan overdrive

    All,

I was playing Uncharted 2 Beta last night and after about 30 mins the fan on my PS3 went into overdrive. Really loud!

    Does this happen anyone else?

Now that I type this out I can remember that when playing the original Uncharted the fan used to get very loud as well, but because that was the first game I got for the PS3 I didn't think anything of it. But since then the fan has been ticking away as normal, even after hours of play.

    I just hope this isn't a prelude to a dead PS3.

    Thanks

That happened to my refurbished model. I asked Sony was it normal, due to the fact it sounded like it was gonna take off, and they said that it's perfectly normal as the fan is thermostatically controlled and the speed will vary depending on the heat generated inside the machine

Its weird that it hasnt been happening at all when playing games for hours at a go but 30 mins in to Uncharted 2 it sounded like a plane preping for take off.

And the only other game to cause my machine to get so loud was Uncharted 1. Is Uncharted heavier on the processer than other games?

It seems to be worse for uninstalled games like Uncharted and COD4.

    I like installs.

you might want to take a hoover to the vents. it doesn't happen on mine after i cleaned it.

I do this every week or so too.

Not sure how much actually gets removed though, I mean the hoover isn't realy strong enough for dust that has properly settled.

Dragging this up as I had a similar problem with anything graphically intensive but I got it fixed by taping up the vents leaving a small gap at back end of the PS3 - enough for a vacuum cleaner hose to cover (PS3 off obviously). With the vacuum cleaner switched on I peeled a small bit of the tape off the front of the machine and it created a good airflow. I did this a couple of times at different areas (side also) and that seemed to clean out the dust.

Another trick, although you should be careful, is holding down the eject button and powering on the PS3 from the on/off switch at the back. This will put the fan in to test mode (it really spins up) but I wouldn't recommend doing this for more than a few seconds at a time. Leaving it run for minutes will probably cause heat damage.

I was having this trouble and now it doesn't happen at all anymore:)

I put the PS3 on the floor and keep the temperature in the room below 21oC. If the room gets any warmer than that ,the ps3 will heat up quickly. The ambient temperature seems to be the biggest problem.

I don't quite understand what you mean here? Are you talking about creating stronger suction by making sure there is only one area (vent) not blocked?
