I suspect it's an issue with packets being routed between 2 routers on aorta's network.

    Same here.

Anything Google related is a no go - google.ie, gmail.com, youtube etc

    Boards seems very slow also.

At least speedtest is giving me proper results

Ditto to all of the above. On UPC here in galway, loads of stuff has ground to a halt, and loads of other stuff just pottering along like nothings happened. Oh UPC, yer just ****e arnt ye!

I can only load about 1 in every 10 pages at the moment. Even Google talk is affected, can't sign into that either.

Luckily I have Eircom in the house as well (I shudder to say luckily...) and that will load the same pages absolutely fine.

Strangely, I can actually ping to a site fine but I can't load any pages.

Just popped in OpenDNS servers. Didnt make a bit of a difference. Still not loading google, youtube etc, and boards (amoung others) is might slow.

Logging off for the night anyways

Same as all of ye, in Galway City (Eastside) I assume its a DNS issue.

God, UPC have really gone to shite!

Just looking at the Inex peering matrix, Google don't peer with UPC. Why there is a Google/Google-owned specific problem I don't know. A pain though. UPC's name server won't return results for those sites and won't route to the IP either. Anyone have any ideas?

i still have eircom too actually. might give it a try. need to use youtube

It's defiantly not a DNS issue, using opendns doesn't help at all.

Although defiantly nothing wrong on my end either cause my Eircom connection works fine. It has to be a routing issue at UPC's end.

The routing issues outlined above basically mean, that UPC has lost the routes (nothing to do with DNS!!) wherever they are peering with Google, probably AMS-IX (Netherlands) or LINX (UK) and thus you end up in a loop-back. As the trace never leaves their network (aorta = UPC), it's a UPC problem.

As for peering, you mean UPC doesn't peer with Google on INEX. Google peers with everybody on the route-server at INEX. It is UPC, that refuses to peer with most ISPs on INEX.

On to UPC now to see what the story is...

surprise surprise. not aware of any issues. :/

wow... I just got a callback from UPC and it was within 30mins! impressed!

Anyway - The person that called me back identified themselves as the head of broadband.

UPC performed preventative maintenance on a router last night (that didn't go as smoothly as planned - ed). It was a similar issue to the one I reported in September. They believe that the issue is now resolved and their won't be a recurrence.

the good news? UPC will be launching 2 methods for communicating planned maintenances and outages.
    1) Channel 999 on the digital service
    2) A scrolling bar on the website showing a list of affected locations. Clicking on a location will give you information about the planned outages / any current issues (using the same data that they put on the phone IVR right now).

They're getting better... Keep reporting issues and providing feedback to UPC (it appears to be working slowly but surely). :)

Couldn't access google or Full Tilt poker here in Galway as well last night. Going to ring them later.

Edit: Missed the post above me. Great, hope they have it sorted for good now.
