    hi,

basically this is what i have

bmw coupe 320cd se 05' 26k on the clock. pristine condition. fed up paying the tax on it , looking for a 08/09 diesel coupe, had my eye on the megane coupe? what you think? would i get a decent trade in? was also looking at the focus? any opinions? it will kill me to lose the power but im looking to slim down running expense (including insurance) and get a sub 1.8 but no less than 1.5

Have a look at a Kia Proceed too. Looks well and €156 a year road tax. the 1.6 diesel is nippy and some Kia dealers can do approved remaps so you wont lose too much power:D

Forget about running costs for a minute, you need to work out how much it will cost you to change car. Do you own the BMW outirght or is there finance or a loan still on it? The depreciation after 1 day of owning a Megane would tax the BMW for 5 years!

i know how to manage the loan situtation. im basically looking for something thats a nippy coupe that falls into the 150-200 tax category and probably have to add 3-4k in with the car. the proceed isnt a bad looking car but the interior gets a big fail :(

you'll save about €8 a week on tax, changing makes no financial sense

+1 on the kia pro'ceed....we have one here the top spec model with all the usuals 1.6 turbo diesel...its a little rocket every bit as quick as the mk5 golf 1.9 td we also have..and any dealer who can over a 7 yr warranty with a car must have total faith in them..cheap tax too 150 odd fort the year and a very sporty looking car

we traded a 03 golf sdi with nearly 100k on the clock and got a great trade in price..couldnt complain so with a beamer coup you should have no probs

OP I'd suggest revising your plan. Spending 3-4k to save €8 a week is utter madness.

well id just be topping up my loan, it wouldnt change the payments, just extending the end of the loan. its not just the tax, it would be the insurance and servicing costs to come im thinking of too.

ive just come to a realisation that there are other things i'd rather be spending my money on :D

I traded down from a BMW 5 series to a new Focus 2.0 TDCI, haven't regretted it. Miniscule running costs and far better performance, I would check out the Focus.

The insurance costs would be about the same (about the same as a 1.6 petrol, on average), and as long as you don't go to a BMW dealer the service won't be too expensive. Besides, extra loan payments = more money spent. My point is still valid.
there are other things i'd rather be spending my money on

Therefore extending your loan for another year or whatever is illogical.

yes but the loan amount i can still live with, even it is extended out, im purely looking at running costs excluding the loan.

:confused: have you seriously thought this through it's madness if you want a car that's cheaper to run fair enough but getting a loan to do that is insane it's false economy it will cost you way more in the long run , obviously you have your mind made up , but for gods sake just spend what you have that at least makes some sense but getting a loan that will cost you 5k after interest is added is crazy that would be the difference in running costs between the cars for 10 years, just think about it before you act it would cost more , you have a car that will depreciate quicker loose more money in long run and not be as good a car

er look if people wanna sell goodcars second hand to buy new ones to sell on second hand the i for one support that.

how many of yer like to buy 5 year old cars for a fraction of what they would cost new
how many times have you wondered why poeple tellthemselves they have to sell as its starting to cost them mony and then drop 7grand in depriciation on a new car? well thats where good 4-5 year old cars come from (that and england) so let him do what he wants

oh ok : mr op yer being stupid if you wanna save money sawp yer bimmer for a 05 diesel and a cash adjustment
