Well my car insurance is up for renew, company that insured me last year for under 400 Euro are looking for over 500 Euro this year, have rung around a couple of places and so far the cheapest is 500 Euro.

I'm in my mid 30's, driving a 1.4l small car, have had a full liscence for two years, was a named driver for two years and have had my own insurance for three years, no penalty points.

So have Insuracne costs gone up significantly in the last year?

Same happened my folks. They got it dropped a bit but it was still more expensive then last year and they hadn't picked up any points or been in crashes. Apparently with the recession people are claiming more.

Same happened to me. Insurance company was looking for €199 extra. Went to an online site and I got better insurance for less than my previous company.

I was with that company for 13 years as well. Shmucks!

I have found that renewal prices have definitely gone up but if you shop around (even with the company you are with) you can find it much cheaper!

well, not really as there's less stock on the road. It's more to do with the Insurance co's and underwriting co's losing on the markets with investments over the last 2 years.
    Shopping round is a must.

Exactly the same happened to me and discussed it in another thread. To renew my current policy would have cost over €100 and I was not pleased with this. (490 euro I think)

I went online to one of the price comparison sites and was quoted 373 euro which was near enough to what I paid last year. I still have no claims, no penalty points and not even a parking ticket. I was ready to pay my 373 euro and my wife called to say that she had got a quote for me for 323 euro.

I have no idea who it is with yet, but knowing my sensible wife, it is a sensible quote from a sensible company at a sensible price. Well done sensible wife !!

Joking aside, it really does show, how important it is to shop around - online and by phone.

Well have been doing some shopping around today and have got a cheaper qoute not as cheap as last year but still quite good, amazing some of the differences in prices, one company qutoting just over 1,000 Euro, another quoted me under 500 Euro, big difference there for the same type of insurance  still a few more calls to make.

One thing that cropped up was paying extra to protect your no claims bonus, is it worth paying extra for this?

Defo........for me, its a must. Ask exactly what the Ts&Cs of the no claim bonus protection cover is exactly to make sure its worth buying.

Yes if your car is worth more than 5K imo, if you have someone hit you that's not insured. Or ya go off yerself, your no claims is protected.

Ya can never, say never, as far as I'm concerned :)
