MyDIT or Gmail System?

Trinity and UCD use a Google, Gmail system for their emails. I'd much prefer to be using the Gmail system as I don't trust MyDIT. Sometimes your emails don't get to the person you're sending them too!

I've posted a poll with this thread to see what other DIT students think.

Would you like to see a switch to Gmail?

    I would!

Which would you prefer MyDIT or Gmail Email System? 1 vote

DCU/St Pats made the transition this summer too. Much better system I think. The systems DIT use ar enever great and to be honest neither are the tech support, in Bolton Street at least. Computers broken all year and essential software updates on key course software not u[dated till the second semester usually. In Mountjoy they dont even have wordprocessing software, not even notepad if you are researching you cant type anything about it. THat is a joke. Cant even check your email there without getting given out too.

    /end rant

Get your class rep to email someone in ditsu about the problems. They're there to help but can only do so if matters are brought to their attention! This year they've been great to us with sorting out problems...!

If this happens at all, will more than likely be after grangegorman is finished.

Well i think it's obvious that Gmail is the better system ,

Have you tried adding your student account to your gmail , all your student emails get sent to your gmail every hour , you can also reply using your student account.
it's great and it does work, now i almost never log on to the dit mail

it's not the most perfect solution, but it's the best way to view your student emails on gmail

    it won't happen.

DIT spent an arm and a leg on sungard and it's fecking awful.

best thing to do is just get your DIT email sent to your gmail, and use gmail servers to send from your DIT address.

i have my gmail, my own domain email, my DIT email and my work email coming through on the one gmail account.

Also, remember to login to mydit once in a while, my account got locked out a few times due to using it within gmail :rolleyes:, So I ended up just using that joke of a system.
It is out-dated, slow, and for some reason wont save you login details? I had to use a firefox extension called "iMacros" to record the events of login into the system to bypass having to type in the user/pass all the time. Useless system, even worse than the Squirrelmail system imo (At least Squirrelmail didnt block your account for stupid reasons and worked flawlessly in gmail!).
Would like if they would switch to Gmail but I think that chance is slim to none :rolleyes:

imap.dit.ie or forward to your own email client are the only solutions.
If only because the sungard client if fcuking awful.

I am not surprised DIT actually spent an arse load of money
on the software. Open source alternitives are out there anyway.

Where is Alpine in that list? Most functional email client out there(besides mutt).

Ye i completely agree there , i log in every few weeks (even though i can't save my log in details ha)

The only thing that slightly annoying is that evey now and again it won't 'fetch' the emails , something to do with an Authentication error , any one else experiencing this ????

I think its fair to assume that pigs will be flying and robots will roam the earth while a zombie apocalypse is happening before DIT adapts a Gmail system

    *edit*
Even while google is building the campus

Thanks for all the info so far...

It seems stupid that they won't just switch? Gmail is free for University Students...

    Hi Folks,

    FYI........

Well as you were saying Pigs may actually fly.....!!!! We (Tracey, Jen, and Myself) are actually working on DIT at the moment to change to Gmail accounts for students. YES change to gmail...pigs may fly after all...but this came up at a meeting at the start of our year were we brought it to the attention of DIT that the email service for students was crap really.

So we met the head if IS and he told us that he will work on getting gmail on board for the start of Sept next year as he couldn't change the system half way threw the year. So the ball is rolling on this folks and we (Tracey, Jen ,and myself) are 100% behind this for students. Happy day??? I think so.

Rofl, is there really any question as to which is better? It's google against a bunch of grossly incompetent bunch of idiots. The wirless network in DIT is rubbish too.

I'm doing a night course and it seems to pick and choose when I can use it. I can always login and get a signal, but god help me trying to get anywhere other then dit.ie

It would be nice to use google wave etc. in classes to share code samples and solutions... but the wifi stinks too much to do that
