platform pedals on mtb or road bike?

is it ridiculous to use platform pedals with clips on a roadbike?
Yes, and as it will give you much less float with tightened straps I don't see how you think it will save your knees.

Yes on the MTB pedals - DMRs are good, had V8s before and have Crank Bros 5050s now would recommend both if you're sure you don't want to stay with clipless.

No on the flats with the road bike. Just no.

Have you considered Speedplay pedals (frogs, zeros etc)? All the advantage of clipless but with much more float than other systems so I believe and models for MTB and road.

Yes, I have DMR V8's on my MTB...seem very good alright for grip with the added bonus of replaceable pins. Bit cheaper than the V12 as far as I can remember! Best of luck.

P.S. I have also heard that Speedplays are good for peole with knee problems because of the non centering friction free float! I don't know if it actually works but would be worth a try before you take a massive jump back in time and technology to flat pedals on a racer! haha

I use BMX-style pedals like those on my touring bike, just on the grounds of "Beware enterprises that require new clothes", and I already had them from my old hybrid. I like wearing the same clothes on the bike as I do off it anyway, and I wear rubber-soled boots all the time.

Bit odd maybe, but the grip is quite good, and you do get some purchase on the upstroke. I'm not recommending you do the same, but I'm happy to be wrong in this case.

I'm using BMX platforms on my road bike. Really like them for the width.

I use DMR V8's + Five Ten shoes. Plenty of grip.

Having recently switched from DMR V8 platforms to Shimano M520 SPDs, I find the SPDs to be better for my knees. The V8s are very, very grippy with standard runners, so once your feet are on them there's effectively no float - you have to lift your foot to change the angle rather than just twist. The SPDs have at least some float, and clipless shoes have better support too.
