Isn't about time Ireland did away with a president and down scale the government? They're way too many departments and just merge some of them into each other like, dept of communications and environment could be one, dept. of health and social and family affairs could be another and so on.

The Taoiseach could easily replace the president. Do away with all the junior ministers because, lets face it, they're not pulling their weight in any shape or form and costing us an absolute fortune. Something really has to be done to sort out the years of bad management because it's the taxpayer is footing the bill as usual.

Well seeing as we no longer have democracy in Ireland, what does it matter?

The EU Lizard army is going to march in and take over any day now. And you can't down scale a lizard, can you?

    Yup. Any day.

Jayzuz if your gonna do it then do it the right way around. Take the taoiseach out and feck a few more stripes onto the prez.

There's been enough daft hastey decisions made so may aswell get this one right.

you are forgetting the constitution and the need to change it. We would no longer be a republic if we start fcuking around with the make up of the dail senate and president etc.

Cutting 50 jobs in the areas you suggest wouldnt even cut a dent in the mountain of a defecit we have.

cutting 10% of the public sector wage bill would however

This "leading by example" ****e is nonsence, and only panders to the absent minded - it doesnt solve our problems. Tackleing the real issues do

A republic without a President?

It's like a monarchy without a King or Queen

Besides you're need a referendum to do what you're proposing. You can't just mess around with the Constitution

I reckon we should charge the families concerned for the bullets used too.

It has to be said though. the dail is way over staffed and so little productivity for so many staff. It would be like your local corner shop with a staff of 100 people, spin-doctors for this, advisers for that and the still f*ck things up. It just doesn't make sense.

A bit like asking the prez to sign off a few constitutional changes before we ask her to turn the lights off and lock the gate on her way out?

The real issue is with the voters though.

I don't know how you'd expect the same electorate who consistently return the likes of Jackie Healy Rae, Beverly Flynn, Michael Lowry and the rest of the parish pump politicians to the Dáil to vote for downsizing the government. The cries of "<insert constituency here> will lose seats and suffer" would see to that.

Plus nobody in the Dáil is going to put this idea forward, not a chance. They'd be terrified they might be one of the ones to lose out on their seat.

Perhaps a bloody coup, a swift restructuring of the Dáil, followed by democratic elections. Can't see anything going wrong there.

Now who wants to sew me a nice uniform?

the problem is however is that, there are free elections and everyone is free to run for election, so as it stands, these are the people we have in government.

What i see happening is that people that would maje great leaders will look at the way the current politicians are been scrutinised and being lambasted for getting their hair cut on the public coffers and think - fcuk that - ill stick to private sector business thanks.

What you'll be left with is clowns like joe higgins, whos politicial agenda for this country would make albania look like a eutopia
