If a player submitted 3 cards in the low 90's when getting their handicap what handicap would you expect them to get?

Should be based on the best of the 3 cards with any big numbers reduced down to double bogey... so ~ 16?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭aster99

ok thanks, was wondering alright was there some type of common formula that is used!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

dont know depends on how the score was made..........a few 10's per round would change it a bit from all bogeys and a few doubles

    what did u get?

its actually myself that i'm wondering about. have yet to play and hand in 3 cards. but having played regular enough duing the summer my average would be somewhere between 91 and 94. usually in and around that mark

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

Btw aster, thoughts of what you handicap may be and how it's arrive at shouldn't really enter your head until after you have handed in your 3 cards for consideration. When your're playing your 3 rounds just go out and play to best of your ability and enjoy the rounds and your handicap will look after itself.

o ya i know that, was just wondering based on what my usual score would be, thanks

Well I submitted 3 cards in the low 90's recently and got a Handicap of 19. Course is a Par 70.

i think around 18 or so would be correct for me and i could play to that, at moment id play a little over +18 for a round so would hope with continued practise i could improve on that

I handed in 3 cards at 99, 100 and 102 and my club gave me a handicap of 18!! this was back in april I don't know how they come up with it i think they pick your best scores on each hole from the 3 cards and use this as your overall score and base your handicap on this,

I played a few opens, regularly scoring between 95-100 and my handicap got up to 19 but i shot an amazing round of 87 2 weeks ago and now i'm back to 18 again !!

Hence the reason your club gave you the handicap they did!!!

Convert to stableford always for handicapps, thought the max you could get was 18 though & then you go higher or lower from there.

    No it's always stroke.

    It's 24 for men afaik.

No, it's not always stroke. Jimboddb is correct. Scores are adjusted for handicapping purposes so that you never record more than 2 over par on any hole. Also, after a strokeplay competition your handicap gets adjusted based on your stableford points score.
    Daithio9 wrote: »

28 is the maximum handicap that can be awarded to a man.

If you have say an 8 or a 9 on a hole it gets reduced down to a double bogey for handicapping purposes. This might help explain why they gave you 18.

Jimboddb and ronaldochokes are correct. Daithio9 is wrong.

Its known as a 'Clause 19' correction, which while not affecting the result of a stroke competition can change your net differential v SSS, and so could cause your handicap to decrease even though your stroke score mightnt suggest it. For eg. Say you had a 74 net on a SS 72. But on one par4 you took 10. For handicapping, the ten will be changed to a six, and you stableford score of 38 pts will be used to cut your handicap.

Its possible they just plucked 18 from the air. Some clubs, while asking you for the 3 cards, then ignore them if it would give a healthy male who is upping his participation in golf a handicap in the 20s. They prefer to err on the low side and let the handicap inconspicuously adjust up through play rather than have someone hoover prizes while their handicap adjusts down.
A sensible policy as proven by your case. The cards would likely have given you a handicap in the mid 20s. Yet as proven by you handicap moving from 18 to 19 to 18 again you are already in that zone and shouldnt have another 6 or 8 shots thats your cards might have suggested you needed.

    FYP

Stableford is not used in determining a persons handicap it is allways stroke.

Daithio9, consider an extreme (much like yourself)...

A guy plays the first 17 holes in pars each time. The 18th has a hex on him and he hits it OOB. Does the same with the second ball. Takes out the bay hill 7 iron and puts his 5th into play. Goes for the green with his 3 wood and puts it in the water. Takes the penalty drop and pitches his 8th onto the green. Two putts for a 10 and a 6 over par 78.
The persons card is always adjusted to allow for these crazy scores... maximum of a double bogey on any hole. Even adjusting our choker above down and giving him a 2 handicap would be very generous.

The 3 cards i handed in for my handicap were all in the mid 90's (par 72 course) and i got a handicap of 22.

Again Daithio9 you are wrong. See the link below.

    http://www.congu.com/template1.asp?pid=162

Like Licksy said earlier this adjustment allows for crazy scores, such as the 10 on the last which he described. It also helps to combat the point one merchants. They cannot now just take a big score on the last hole or last couple of holes having played well all the way around and get point one. If they have 40 points after 17 holes and take a 12 on the last they will get cut based on the 40 points and not their gross score.

depends on the club and handicap commitee, think that if they have got burned in the past they will give you a very low handicap i joined a club 6 months ago and handed in 3 cards of 94, 99 and 104 and was given 14.5 for my handicap course is par72, needless to say havent played to my handicap since, dissapointed as its a bit disheartening going out and only ever seeing your handicap go up and up and up.......

It pains me to say it, but I'm pretty sure that Daithio9 is correct on this.

He is not saying that there is no adjustment to the stroke scoring... all he is saying is that it is not stableford.

From what I have read, that is correct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭Patrick_K

How could they use stableford to calculate your original handicap - you need a handicap to calculate stableford points in the first place.

    Hi jimbling
I'll try to clear it up here. He is wrong. In obtaining your original handicap all scores over double bogey are reduced down to double bogey and handicap awarded accordingly. In awarding a handicap it is storkes that are used, albeit adjusted strokes. Thereafter handicaps are adjusted based on your stableford points and not your gross score. Daithio9 is incorrect beacause he has said, in each of his last two posts, that ones stroke score is ALWAYS used. It isn't. In fact it's never used after your handicap has been awarded.

hey was just wondering if anybody could help me out. I joined a club about 3 years ago and didn't have much time to play so i just filled in 3 cards and had someone sign them (stupid I know). they were all between 20 and 22 over par. I was given a handicap of 11.4 and have been trying to have it ammended ever since. I've spoken to my handicap sec. and he said theres nothing he can do. he said he'll try have it ammended but he's been saying that for a long time now. I'm planning on changing clubs in january. Any ideas would be great.
