Can anyone recommend a good free program that will rip my dvds AND convert existing video files to the PSP format?

    Thanks.

Not sure about ripping DVD's but the Sony "Media Go" software will automatically convert any type of video file to a playable format on the psp when you drag n' drop it over.

It seems awful. According to the guide within the program you need to download at least two other programs to rip a dvd.

    Can anyone recommend another one?

No luck. Doesn't seem to do DVDs.

    Anyone else?

Theres a great free one called 'ImTOO DVD to PSP Converter' but its not free and the trial version only lets you do 5 minutes per file.

xvid4psp 5 has an option to do DVDs, but I can't vouch for it working...
Great program for converting other video files though

I use ImTOO. Bought it for €45 and it rips the dvd and converts the file to MP4 in one go. Picture quality is excellent but sometimes the sound can be slightly out of sync with the picture.

I had to resort to using one program to rip the DVD and another to convert it.

To convert the 43 minutes of video to an MP4 took my computer around two hours. Is that normal? How long does ImTOO take?

I found that trial version to be very, very user friendly.

To convert a 20min tv show (140mb) it takes about 5 mins to convert and x-fer to the psp with media go.

Usually just under the playtime of what ever your ripping. If i was ripping a dvd that was an hour and a half long it would just take under an hour and a half to rip it and convert to MP4. Thats at the best picture quality and best sound quality. If you want it done quicker you can always sacrifice some quality.

Its very easy to use and the quality is good. I'm sure there are faster tools out there but i think its down to the speed of your dvd drive as well.

The actual ripping of the episode to a vob file didn't take very long at all, it was the actual converson from VOB to MP4 that took an age (and that obv isn't related to disc drive speed). I will try medigo as suggesed by CC (assume tis free).

I thought you meant ripping the dvd took long. I tried using different types of freeware to rip dvds then different freeware to convert vob files to mp4 and just got a bit sick of it. At least with Imtoo you just put in your dvd select the part you want and its ready to transfer to your psp when its done. I just didnt have the patients for the free way ;)

Crap, unofficial firmware won't work with Media Go.
